Seawolves Split Second Doubleheader With Concordia

Rohnert Park, Calif. – For the second straight day, the Sonoma State Seawolves split a doubleheader with the Concordia Cavaliers, but much like Saturday's duo of games at Seawolf Diamond, Sonoma State almost had a sweep.

In game one, Concordia (2-5) got out to a 7-3 lead before a furious rally in the ninth put the go-ahead run on for Sonoma State (3-8). However, the Cavaliers were able to hold off the Seawolves to take the opener, 7-5.

Sonoma State loaded the bases thanks to a two-out rally where singles by Brian Bynum and Trevor Abrams cut the lead to two, but Daniel Caresio struck out against Austin Hadley to end the game.

Caresio and Tyler Glenn each had two hits for Sonoma State, with Grant St. Martin hitting his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left in the first.

Cal Becker (0-2) started off rough but settled down in his four innings, striking out seven. Gerhett Moser (1-1) was very efficient for Concordia, throwing eight strong innings where 76 of his 98 pitches went for strikes.

Game two saw Concordia get out to a 3-0 lead before a four run rally in the fourth gave Sonoma State their first lead of either game. The Seawolves added a run in the fifth and rode great pitching from Haydon Turpin and Jackson Zarubin to a 5-3 victory.

Rupert Watson and Ryan O'Malley drove in the first two runs of the fourth as Watson got hit by a pitch and O'Malley grounded out to first. St. Martin then followed with a two-out single to right to plate Watson and Jared English to give Sonoma State the lead for good.

Turpin (1-0) needed only 14 pitches in his final two innings to earn the victory, giving way to Zarubin's scoreless seventh inning, which earned the senior his first save.

Watson reached base four times in the game, including two walks. Brett Sesma went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.

UP NEXT: Sonoma travels to San Francisco State for a rare Tuesday conference game with the Gators. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
