ROHNERT PARK - A pair of tremendous starting pitching peformances and two big innings at the plate helped the Sonoma State Seawolves to a Saturday doubleheader sweep at Seawolf Diamond against the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros.
Game 1Senior
Ryan Luna's six strong innings on the mound and his team's five-run third inning at the plate helped the Seawolves to an 11-3 rout over the Toros in the morning game.
The five-run third inning saw the Seawolves bat around for the first time this season, getting to Dominguez HIlls starter TyRay Gatewood (1-2) with a string of back-to-back singles and a run-scoring double by senior standout
Ryan O'Malley. In the fourth, freshman
Grant St. Martin hit a mammoth two-run homer to left field to make it a 7-1 ballgame and chase Gatewood.
Meanwhile, Luna (2-0) cruised with only a little trouble in the fourth, striking out eight and allowing only six baserunners. He threw 55 of his 81 pitches for strikes. Just like in Luna's previous start,
Aldo Severson came on to finish off the final three innings, earning his second two-inning save in the process.
Adam Manzer and
Brett Sesma had three hits each for Sonoma State, with O'Malley,
Matthew Richards and
Tyler Glenn each adding two hits. Manzer had a bases-clearing triple in the eighth inning to put an exclamation point on the early game for the Seawolves.
Game 2Following Luna's lead from the opener, it was junior
Haydon Turpin's turn to put together a gem of a start, as his six shutout innings gave the Seawolves an opportunity to break it open in the sixth, with the four-run inning helping Sonoma State to a 7-2 victory in the afternoon contest.
Turpin (2-1) was incredibly efficient in his six innings, throwing 52 of 71 pitches for strikes and striking out seven while allowing only three baserunners. It was his best start of the season and his second consecutive victory after his win last week against Concordia.
At the plate, the trio of O'Malley, Richards and Manzer again led the way, each nettting two hits with Manzer driving in two runs.
Sterling Champagne drove in two runs, as well. O'Malley and Richards each scored two runs.
Jackson Zarubin pitched the final two innings and struck out five, having only struck out two batters in his first four appearances this season.
It was the first doubleheader victory of the season for Sonoma State, as the Seawolves have now won four of their last six games at the friendly confines of Seawolf Diamond.
