Seawolves Complete Series Sweep With 8-1 Win Over Toros

Rohnert Park, Calif. - After some tough losses in non-conference play, the Sonoma State Seawolves were hoping they could get back on track in a competitive CCAA over the weekend when they hosted Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Having won only three games all season coming into the weekend, Sonoma State's offense came alive against the Toros, as they completed a three-game sweep with a dominant 8-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond.

It was again Ryan O'Malley leading the charge for Sonoma State (6-9, 4-2 CCAA), as the senior ended a tremendous month of February by going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and four driven in. Over the first 15 games of the season, he's hitting .455 (26-for-57) with four home runs, 10 doubles, 18 RBI and 16 runs scored. He leads all regulars in nearly every major offensive category.

It wasn't just O'Malley who had his swing going this weekend. Matthew Richards had his third straight two-hit game and scored two runs. Grant St. Martin added two hits himself, including a double. Cody Morris drove home two runs and reached base twice. The team had four doubles in all, one shy of their season-best five double performance against Cal State San Bernandino on January 30.

As a team, the Seawolves scored 26 runs over the weekend. They also had 38 hits, including 11 for extra bases. Seawolf pitchers found their power stuff on the mound, striking out more hitters (37) than they allowed baserunners (33).

Matt Hammonds (1-0) was solid in his five innings of work, striking out five and allowing six hits, one walk, and one unearned run against Dominguez Hills (4-7, 0-3 CCAA). Cal Becker was overpowering in relief, allowing only two hits and one walk in three scoreless innings with five strikeouts. He now has 16 strikeouts in only 10 1/3 innings this season. DeVon Golden finished off the game with a scoreless ninth.

UP NEXT: The Seawolves have a test next weekend when they travel to the Inland Empire to take on Cal Poly Pomona for a three-game series. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 4 with the first pitch set for 2 p.m.
