ROHNERT PARK -- Fighting through 10 ties and nine lead changes, the Sonoma State men's basketball team nearly pulled off an upset, but couldn't overcome a 10-point deficit late in the second half in Friday's 68-62 loss to Cal Poly Pomona at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park.
The Seawolves fell to 12-8 overall and 7-7 in the CCAA while the Broncos jumped to 17-4 and 10-4 against conference opponents.
Sonoma got off to a fast start, scoring the first seven points of the contest and eventually led in the game for four minutes longer than Pomona. With 11:43 remaining in the contest,
Jimmy Golden hit a free throw to break a 43-43 tie, but the Broncos rallied for 10 unanswered points to take a nine point advantage at 53-44 with 8:33 to play.
The CPP lead got up to as much as 10 points on a couple of occasions, the last being at the 5:34 mark, before SSU went on a 6-0 run to come within four points at 61-57 with just under three minutes on the clock. However, the visitors pulled away again late to secure the six-point win on the Seawolves' home floor.
James Davis led all scorers with 25 points on 9 of 18 shooting, draining seven three pointers in 27 minutes of action.
David Ahern chipped in with 17 points.
James Slade tallied eight points, eight rebounds and four assists. As a team, Sonoma connected on 21 of 52 shots (40.4 percent).
On the other side of the court, Cal Poly Pomona hit half of its shots (26 of 52). Jordan Faison recorded a double-double with team highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Sonoma State returns to the hardwood Saturday when it plays host to Humboldt State. Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm in The Wolves' Den.
