Bats Come Alive As Seawolves Sweep Pioneers Saturday

Rohnert Park, Calif. - After coming away emptyhanded during a doubleheader in Hayward on Friday against Cal State East Bay, the Sonoma State Seawolves lit up the scoreboard against the Pioneers on Saturday, as they scored 19 runs across two games and hit three home runs on their way to a sweep at Seawolf Diamond and a split of the weekend series.

Game 1 - Sonoma State 9, Cal State East Bay 1

In the opener, a trio of Seawolves each had a trio of hits, as Bryant Cid, Ryan O'Malley and Matthew Richards had big days at the plate to lead Sonoma State to the first of two routs on the day.

O'Malley's day included his team-best sixth home run of the season, a towering solo shot to right field off Brandon Acosta (0-1) in the third that gave the Seawolves the lead for good. Richards had a pair of run-scoring singles, driving in three runs in all. The team had a season-best 17 hits in all, with Daniel Caresio, Grant St. Martin and Spencer Neve each having two hits.

Sonoma scored eight combined runs in the second, third and fourth innings, with the five run barrage in the fourth putting the game away early. Cid and Caresio each singled with one out, chasing Acosta for Cole Compton. After an O'Malley walk loaded the bases, Grant St. Martin had an RBI infield single to begin the run.

Richards followed with a two-run single off the center field wall, and after an Adam Manzer walk, Neve had an infield single that he beat out that also induced a throwing error, plating two more runs for Sonoma State.

On the mound, it was a great game for Matt Reynolds (2-0), who put together another quality start for the Seawolves. The southpaw allowed the one run on seven hits in his six innings of work with four strikeouts. DeVon Golden pitched three scoreless innings in relief, striking out two and allowing one hit on the way to his first save of the season.

Game 2 - Sonoma State 10, Cal State East Bay 3

In the seven-inning series finale, big innings in the second and third propelled the Seawolves to another blowout win over the Pioneers.

The three-run second inning opened the scoring in the game, as consecutive errors by East Bay allowed Sonoma State the early lead they would never give up.

In the fourth, St. Martin continued a big day with an RBI single to plate O'Malley, which then set up a towering three-run homer from Matthew Richards, his third home run of the season and his second in as many days.

St. Martin then joined the home run brigade with a solo shot in the fifth, his fourth of the season and also his second in as many days. The final two runs came home on a bases loaded walk from Caresio and and a sacrifice fly from O'Malley in the sixth.

Ricky Clark (2-1) put together his longest start of 2016 and was very effective, allowing only five baserunners in five innings while striking out three. He escaped a bases loaded jam in his final frame by coercing a ground out to end the inning.

Cody Bennett pitched the final two innings in relief for Sonoma State after replacing fellow right-hander Taylor Leach, who had ran into some trouble to begin the sixth inning.

St. Martin had three hits in all, falling a triple shy of the cycle while driving in two runs and scoring three times himself. Brett Sesma scored a run and went 1-for-2, as did Rayson Romero.

Up Next: The Seawolves now begin a long layoff, as they will not play another game until Saturday, April 2 when they start a three-game series on the road against Cal State Los Angeles. They will return to Seawolf Diamond on Tuesday, April 5 when they host San Francisco State at 2 p.m.
