LOS ANGELES -- After two weeks without a game, the Sonoma State baseball team began a busy month of April with a doubleheader against Cal State Los Angeles that made up for lost time. Both games went into extra innings, as the Seawolves and the Golden Eagles split the first two games of their weekend series.
Game 1 - Sonoma State 6, Cal State Los Angeles 5 (14 innings)In a back-and-forth series opener, the Seawolves broke through after four-plus hours when
Matthew Richards singled home
Ryan O'Malley for what turned out to be the game's winning run.
O'Malley reached on a one-out single in the top of the 14th inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He then stole third base and came home on an infield single by Richard, giving the Seawolves their second lead of the game and one they would not relinquish.
Sonoma State's first lead came in the ninth inning. Down 4-2 with three outs remaining, the Seawolves put together a furious rally against Gabriel Gentner.
Rayson Romero and
Daniel Caresio singled to put the tying run aboard. After
Spencer Neve flew out, it was O'Malley who struck yet another big blow in his tremendous senior campaign, homering to right-center on the first pitch he saw to make it 5-4, Seawolves.
But the Golden Eagles came back to tie it in the bottom half, as Christian Broussard's one-out RBI single made it 5-5.
Jackson Zarubin then entered the game and sent the game to extras by inducing a double play.
For the Seawolves, it was their first extra-inning game since February 6th, when they lost a home game to Cal State Monterey Bay in 10 innings, 7-6.
O'Malley had a tremendous game, going 2-for-5 with the aforementioned home run, three runs scored and two walks. Three other Seawolf hitters had two hits apiece, as Caresio, Richards and
Adam Manzer joined O'Malley with multi-hit games. Caresio also drew two walks.
Cal Becker picked up the win for Sonoma State with
Cody Bennett earning his first save of the season.
Ryan Luna pitched the first five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. Two of the runs were earned and he struck out five.
Game 2 - Cal State Los Angeles 4, Sonoma State 3 (10 innings)It didn't take nearly as long for Sonoma State to play another extra-inning game, as another back-and-forth effort saw the Golden Eagles come back twice to tie the game before walking off in the 10th inning. After two
Ricky Clark walks, Dakota Hernandez singled up the middle to plate the winning run, giving the Golden Eagles their sixth CCAA victory of the season.
The Seawolves took their first lead in the fifth when
Grant St. Martin doubled to right field, plating
Daniel Caresio and
Rayson Romero to give Sonoma State a 2-1 lead. Cal State L.A. would tie the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning, but Sonoma State got that run back in their next at-bats.
Romero reached on an infield single and was pushed to second on a
Ryan O'Malley walk. St. Martin then grounded into a double play, but Romero moved to third, setting the stage for pinch-hitter
Matthew Richards, who singled home Romero to give Sonoma State the lead once more.
Haydon Turpin did well to keep the Golden Eagles at bay, allowing only five baserunners in 5 1/3 innings in a good start where he three 44 of 73 pitches for strikes. Romero led the offense for Sonoma State, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Caresio,
Trevor Mallett and
Cody Morris each drew two walks.
