ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State women's tennis team got back on track Friday, dispatching visiting Westmont, 7-2, at the SSU Tennis Courts in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves, ranked at No. 24 in the NCAA Division II poll, improved to 11-4 this season. The Warriors, a Top 10 team in the NAIA rankings, fell to 4-7.
"This was a great win for us," said SSU head coach
Joaquin Lopez. "Westmont is a very good team with some talented players and we fought very hard to get the win today. I was very happy with the result."
The duo of
Katherine Long and
Karlee Budge got the day off on the right foot with an easy 8-2 victory over their opponents at No. 3 doubles before Westmont came back to win at No. 2 against
Amanda Zuidema and
Hillary Fazekas, 8-5. At No. 1,
Jensyn Warren and
Jordyn Kearney battled with Lauren Stratman and Isabel Lee all the way to a 7-point tiebreaker in which Warren and Kearney prevailed, 9-8 (7-3), to give SSU the 2-1 match lead.
In singles play, Fazekas (6-0, 6-0) and Budge (7-5, 6-0) earned straight-set wins at No. 6 and No. 5, respectively, to put Sonoma up 4-1 in the match and just one point away from clinching the win. Stratman of the Warriors defeated Kearney 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 for Westmont's second point of the afternoon, but a 6-1, 6-3 win by Zuidema at No. 4 clinched the match win for the Seawolves, their 11th of the season.
