Big Inning Leads Sonoma To Series Win Over #21 Broncos

POMONA, Calif. - It looks like the Sonoma State Seawolves have made the rest of the CCAA take notice.

After a tough, come-from-behind victory in game two of a Friday doubleheader, the Seawolves erupted for a seven-run second inning and held off a late charge from Cal Poly Pomona for an 8-7 victory, taking two of three games on the road in the process.

The second inning was highlighted by a two-run single from Spencer Neve, who brought home Rayson Romero and Brett Sesma in the middle of the furious rally against Peter Bayer (1-2). 11 batters in all came to the plate, and all seven runs came home with two outs.

Walks by Romero and Bryant Cid with the bases loaded brought home the first two runs, and Ryan O'Malley added an RBI double to plate Neve. By the time Grant St. Martin singled home O'Malley, Sonoma State led 7-0.

After the two teams traded runs, the Broncos put together a comeback, scoring six consecutive runs to make it 8-7, as Ryan Webberly's two-run shot in the ninth inning made things interesting. But Jackson Zarubin struck out Alex Gaskin to end the game and secure the series victory for the Seawolves.

SSU has now won five of their last seven games in CCAA play and are two games away from the .500 mark overall.

Four players for the Seawolves had two hits, as Neve, O'Malley, Grant St. Martin and Cody Morris led the Seawolf attack. St. Martin had three RBI and O'Malley scored two runs. Ricky Clark (1-1) picked up the win in relief for Sonoma State.

UP NEXT: The Seawolves will play at a neutral site on Tuesday, as they take on the Academy of Art at Laney College in Oakland. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
