TURLOCK, Calif. – Mayleen Mazon went 3 for 6 with a double, a home run and four RBI and five others recorded at least three hits as the Sonoma State softball team went 2-0 on the first day of the Tournament of Champions Friday at Pedretti Sports Complex in Turlock.
The Seawolves improve to 19-13 on the year and will return to action on Saturday with two more games – Hawaii Pacific at 4:30 pm followed by a 7:00 pm matchup with Chaminade.
Sonoma State 9, Academy of Art 2 Mazon continued her offensive prowess early on, blasting a 2-1 pitch up and over the left field fence in the top of the second inning to put the Seawolves up 2-0.
Five more runs came home for Sonoma in the third inning and it began with White's two-run single through the left side scoring
Ally Bryant and
Carlie Daniel.
Sarah Langley added an RBI single to right followed by RBIs off the bat of
Malory Masajlo and
Alee Balanon to put the Seawolves up big, 7-0.
In the sixth,
Jena Kaser hit a fielder's choice to the short stop with the bases loaded to score Balanon for an eight-run lead.
With the eight-run rule looming in the bottom of the sixth for the Academy of Art, Sonoma State was just one strike away from inducing the mercy rule, but Samantha Klune hit a rocket to right field that got up and over Mazon allowing two runs to score and the game to go on.
In the seventh, the Seawolves added a run for fun on a slow grounder to first base by Balanon that bounced off the glove of the first baseman, allowing Balanon to reach and Masajlo to score for the 9-2 advantage.
In the last chance for the Urban Knights, they got a lead off single, but that would be it as the Seawolves secured the 9-2 win.
Brielle Vidmar got the complete-game victory, improving to 6-1 this season; the freshman gave up two runs on four hits and four walks, striking out one. Offensively, Balanon and Masajlo had three hits and one run batted in,
Jordann White was 2 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored, and
Sarah Langley was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
The win was the Seawolves' 12th straight victory over the Urban Knights, dating back to 2011.
Sonoma State 5, Hawaii Hilo 2 Despite having to start the game an hour and a half later than originally scheduled due to previous games running long, the Seawolves picked up where they left off, Mazon specifically, as she ripped a bases-loaded double to right field in the bottom of the first inning to score a pair of runs that put SSU on top early, 2-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, Sonoma tacked on three more runs on an RBI double from Langley, an RBI triple from
Lindsey Calcany Blair and an RBI single by Balanon to put SSU up by five runs.
The Vulcans began to chip away, however, plating runs in the fifth and the sixth innings, but that's all they would get as the Seawolves held on for the 5-2 victory.
Amanda Llerena (12-7) went the distance, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk, striking out seven. Mazon finished going 2 for 2 with the two-RBI double in the first. Calcany Blair went 2 for 3 with the run-scoring triple in the fourth.
