Seawolves Clinch No. 3 Seed In CCAA Tourney On Senior Day

ROHNERT PARK -- After a 4-1 victory in game one, Alee Balanon, with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning of a scoreless game, ripped a 3-2 pitch into shallow center field, allowing Mayleen Mazon to score from third base, lifting the Sonoma State softball team to a dramatic 1-0 walkoff win over visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills to cap the regular season and clinch the No. 3 seed in next weekend's CCAA Championship Tournament in Stockton.

The Seawolves improved to 32-20-1 overall and 24-15-1 in the CCAA, finishing third in the conference standings.  The Toros saw their season come to an end at 15-38 (8-32 CCAA).

Sonoma will enter the CCAA Championship Tournament at Arnaiz Stadium in Stockton on Friday as the No. 3 seed and will face No. 2 seed Chico State in the first round.  No. 1 seed Humboldt State and No. 4 seed UC San Diego will meet in the other first round game.  Times have yet to be announced by the CCAA office.

In the opener, Sonoma didn't waste any time putting runs up on the board, scoring twice in the first and twice more in the second to take a 4-0 lead early.  Carlie Daniel scored Alison Strycula on an RBI single up the middle before Jena Kaser brought home Daniel on a single through the left side for the 2-0 advantage.

An inning later, Balanon singled home Strycula again before Daniel brought Balanon around to score for the four-run lead.

From then on, it was all Amanda Llerena in her final regular season start in the circle.  The senior, who improved to 20-9 to eclipse the 20-win mark for the third-straight year, was solid throughout, despite giving up the lone run to the Toros in the top of the seventh on back-to-back doubles to open the frame.  Llerena allowed five hits and two walks, striking out seven.

Balanon went 2 for 2 with two stolen bases, Daniel went 2 for 3 with two RBI and Strycula went 1 for 3 with two runs scored.

In the regular season finale, neither team could get a run in on SSU starter Brielle Vidmar or CSUDH starter Alyssa Valinches for the first nine and a half innings of play.  Finally, in the bottom of the 10th, Mazon led the inning off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice by Kristina Ricossa, then to third on a groundout by Strycula.  That's when Balanon worked the count full before knocking Mazon in for the game-winner on Senior Day.

Vidmar (9-5) allowed seven hits in her complete-game shutout win, giving up one walk and striking out four.  Valinches, on the other hand, allowed eight base hits to the Seawolves, but struck eight of them out as well.  Balanon had four of Sonoma's eight hits as she went 4 for 5 with the game-winning RBI.
