CHICO, Calif. -- Daniel Caresio went 2 for 3 at the plate, but the Sonoma State baseball team was held to just three hits in Sunday's 6-0 loss to Chico State in the series finale at Nettleton Stadium in Chico.
The Seawolves (16-24, 14-15 CCAA) have fallen two games out of the final playoff spot in the CCAA North Division with eight games left to play in the regular season. The Wildcats (28-14, 18-12 CCAA) maintain a one-game lead over Cal State Monterey Bay for the top spot in the North.
Sonoma was handcuffed by the pitching effort of Chico's Dalton Erb, who threw a three-hit, complete-game shutout with one walk and 11 strikeouts. Erb only got better throughout the game as he didn't allow a hit and fanned seven Seawolves in the final three innings. Caresio had two of the hits,
Spencer Neve had the other.
Matt Hammonds (2-3) started for SSU, lasting 4.2 innings in which he allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks before being lifted in the fifth with Chico State leading 4-0.
Ricky Clark gave up the other two runs to Chico in the sixth inning.
Sonoma State will head to Turlock on Saturday for a doubleheader at Stanislaus State, beginning at Noon. The Seawolves and Warriors then wrap up the weekend series in Rohnert Park on Sunday with another doubleheader also starting at Noon.
