Turlock, Calif. - In the race to overtake Cal State East Bay for a spot in the CCAA playoffs, the Sonoma State Seawolves began a four game home-and-home series with Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday, earning a split with the Warriors to remain three games back of the Pioneers.
Game 1 - Sonoma State 6, Stanislaus State 2
In the opener, a two-run home run by
Grant St. Martin and a big day at the plate from
Tyler Glenn helped the Seawolves to a victory.
St. Martin opened the scoring with an opposite field shot to right, plating
Spencer Neve to give Sonoma State the 2-0 lead. After a Stanislaus solo homer in the second cut it to 2-1, Glenn reached on a fielding error by Warrior first baseman Aldo Koutsoyanopulos to score Neve and
Ryan O'Malley and make it43-1.
Adam Manzer then reached on an infield single to bring home St. Martin and make it a 5-1 game, way out of reach for the Warriors to come back. Glenn put the exclamation point on the game for Sonoma State with a solo shot in the seventh, his first home run of the season.
Meanwhile,
Matt Hammonds kept the Warriors at bay with seven strong innings, allowing only five hits and two walks while striking out three and allowing the two runs.
DeVon Golden pitched the last two innings for the Seawolves, striking out three and walking one.
O'Malley went 3-for-4 to lead the Seawolf offense while Glenn went 2-for-4. St. Martin added two hits, as well.
Game 2 - Stanislaus State 7, Sonoma State 1
The doubleheader finale was scheduled to go only seven innings, which made the Warriors early offensive burst against
Ricky Clark and
Wade Berryhill make the game even shorter.
The Warriors scored twice in the second and four times in the third, adding the final run in the fourth to create a deficit too large for Sonoma State to overtake. The Seawolves could muster only the single run in their final at-bats, as
Bryant Cid drew a bases loaded walk to bring home
Tyler Glenn for Sonoma State's lone run-scoring bit of offense.
Glenn continued his big day with a 2-for-4 effort in the second game, leading the Seawolf offense. Neve,
Adam Manzer and
Trevor Abrams each picked up base hits for Sonoma State, who couldn't figure out Ryan Pamaro, the southpaw that ended up an out shy of a complete game for the Warriors.
UP NEXT: A crucial doubleheader for Sonoma State gets underway on Sunday at Seawolf Diamond where the Seawolves will host the Warriors in two nine-inning games. The first pitch in the opener is scheduled for 12 p.m.
