Rohnert Park, Calif. - A day after splitting two games in Turlock, the Sonoma State Seawolves welcomed the Stanislaus State Warriors for two games on Sunday, trying to keep pace with Cal State East Bay for the last North Division spot in the CCAA playoffs.
Behind a tremendous pitching effort from
Cal Becker and some extra-inning heroics from
Trevor Abrams, the Seawolves won a nailbiter in the opener before the Warrior offense woke up in the early innings of game two, earn both teams a split of both the action on Sunday and the weekend's four-game series.
Game 1 - Sonoma State 2, Stanislaus State 1 (11 innings)
Cal Becker was sensational, allowing one hit and one unearned run in seven innings while striking out 12, the most strikeouts by a Seawolf starter this season, but the game was still tied at 1-1 whne he left the game, and it stayed that way as the game went into extra innings.
In the bottom of the 11th,
Trevor Abrams ripped a shot down the left-field line to plate
Jared English for the walk-off victory, as his teammates mobbed him coming around first base to celebrate the huge victory.
Abrams had his best game of the season, going 2-for-5 with a double and the game-winning hit, the highlights of a low-scoring affair that saw only nine hits between the two teams in their 73 total at-bats. As dominant as Becker was for SSU, Robbie DeVries was very good in his eight innings, allowing only five hits and an unearned run himself.
That run came thanks to a
Ryan O'Malley double play ball in the bottom of the first, as
Daniel Caresio scored thanks to a throwing error during the previous at-bat by
Adam Manzer. After the Warriors answered back with their lone run in the fourth, the game went back-and-forth scoreless until Abrams struck the final blow.
Aldo Severson picked up the win in relief with four great innings, allowing only one hit with four strikeouts.
Game 2 - Stanislaus State 10, Sonoma State 2
In the series finale, Stanislaus jumped all over SSU starter
Ryan Luna early on, scoring five times in the second inning and bringing 10 batters to the plate on their way to a rout of the Seawolves.
Abrams and
Bryant Cid each drew two walks for SSU, with O'Malley driving in a run and hitting his team best 14th double of the season, as well.
The loss dropped SSU to 16-16 in CCAA play, putting them 2 1/2 games back of Cal State East Bay. The Pioneers play San Francisco State on Tuesday, which will give the Seawolves a better idea of what to expect with their own four-game series against the Gators this weekend.
UP NEXT: SSU's pivotal series with San Francisco State begins with a game on Friday, May 6 in San Francisco. Frist pitch is set for 3 p.m.
