SAN FRANCISCO -- Amanda Llerena continues to be untouchable to opposing hitters as she showcased her talent again on Wednesday, posting a pair of complete game victories, allowing just one run on eight hits in 14 innings as the Sonoma State softball team jumped into third place in the CCAA standings with wins of 5-0 and 3-1 over host San Francisco State.
The Seawolves (24-14, 16-9 CCAA) are now one-half game ahead of the fourth-place Gators (22-17, 16-10 CCAA) in the conference, and both sit behind CCAA-leader Humboldt State (31-3-1, 20-2 CCAA) and Chico State (26-10, 17-9 CCAA).
In the opener,
Jena Kaser gave Sonoma all the runs it needed, and more, blasting a grand slam in the third inning to break the scoreless tie and give Llerena more than enough cushion the rest of the way. For good measure, the Seawolves added a run in the fourth on a
Lindsey Calcany Blair RBI single scoring
Mayleen Mazon for the 5-0 lead and eventual victory.
Meanwhile, Llerena dealt in the circle, shutting out the Gators and allowing five hits and no walks while striking out eight. She followed it up with three-hit effort in game two, even no-hitting SF State until a bunt single by the Gators in the fifth ended the no-hit bid. The only run Llerena allowed on the day came in the final inning of the day on a sacrifice fly with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, but she retired the next two batters in order to secure the Seawolves' midweek sweep of SF State; Llerena improved to 16-7 in the circle this season.
Offensively, Sonoma scored one run in the first, second and fifth innings to account for the 3-1 win.
Jordann White singled home
Alee Balanon in SSU's first at bat, Calcany Blair doubled home
Kristine Ricossa in the second, and
Carlie Daniel also recorded an RBI double, plating Calcany Blair in the fifth.
Calcany Blair went 4 for 5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in the doubleheader, as Kaser had the four RBI on her grand slam in game one, both leading the way for the Seawolves on offense Wednesday.
Sonoma State will do battle with No. 3 Humboldt State up in Arcata on Monday and Tuesday.
