With Friday Blowout Win, Seawolves Still in CCAA Race

San Francisco, Calif. - Entering the final weekend of the regular season with Cal State East Bay two ahead in the loss column for a spot in the CCAA playoffs, the Sonoma State Seawolves kept their hopes alive after an 11-4 romp over San Francisco State on Friday afternoon that featured a season-best 18 hits.

The two teams traded runs in the first five innings, with Sonoma State answering the Gators' first run with a run off a double play in the second inning. After San Francisco retook the lead, Spencer Neve singled home Bryant Cid to tie the game at 2-2.

The Seawolves really broke free in the sixth inning, when they put up five runs against San Francisco starter Dillon Houser to chase him from the game. It began with a Matthew Richards solo shot, as the Nevada transfer put Sonoma State into the lead for good. But the Seawolves weren't quite done.

Sonoma State loaded the bases soon after the Richards homer, and it was Neve who came up with the big hit, doubling to left to clear the bases and make it 7-3. After Ryan O'Malley plated Neve with an RBI single to make it 8-3 the game was well in hand for the Seawolves.

Daniel Caresio's big day culminated with two RBI singles, giving him a 4-for-5 day at the plate along with a walk and the two RBIs. Cid also went 4-for-5 with three runs scored. Richards ended his day 3-for-5 with the homer and three runs scored, as well. O'Malley, Rayson Romero and Brett Sesma each added a hit, with Sesma scoring twice.

Matt Hammonds got the win for Sonoma with five solid innings on the mound, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

UP NEXT: It's Senior Day for the Seawolves on Saturday, with the 16 Sonoma State seniors being honored before the doubleheader with San Francisco. First pitch is set for 12 p.m., with the second game, a seven-inning affair, beginning a half hour after the end of game one.
