With Sweep of Gators, Seawolves Playoff Hopes Still Alive

Rohnert Park, Calif. - It's gonna come down to the last day of the regular season, but the Sonoma State Seawolves have put themselves in position to grab hold of the final playoff spot in the CCAA North Division.

On a day where Sonoma State honored the 16 seniors that were playing in their final games at Seawolf Diamond this season, the Seawolves swept their doubleheader with San Francisco State to keep pace with Cal State East Bay going into the final regular season game of 2016

Game 1 - Sonoma State 5, San Francisco State 1

In the opener, the Seawolves got another great start from Cal Becker and rode the hot bats of Daniel Caresio and Tyler Glenn to victory over the Gators.

It was Glenn who got the scoring started with an RBI single in the third inning, bringing home Caresio to give SSU a 1-0 lead. In the fourth, Rayson Romero lined the first of his two doubles on the day down the left field line to plate Bryant Cid and make it 2-0. Caresio then bounced a ball up the middle that got through to score Romero and make it 3-0.

In the fifth inning with two runners on, perhaps the strangest play of the game plated Sonoma State's final two runs, as Cody Morris roped one to right field only to have it bounce in front of Gator right fielder Myles Franklin and take a wicked hop over his head and all the way to the wall, turning what could have been a single to load the bases into a two-run triple, plating Glenn and Matthew Richards.

A week after his best start of 2016 against Stanislaus State, Cal Becker continued his late season success with another quality start, going six innings and allowing only one run on four hits and three walks with six strikeouts. He allowed three hits to begin the seventh before getting pulled, but Jackon Zarubin allowed only one inherited runner to score to keep the Seawolves in control.

Zarubin went 2 2/3 innings before the Gators started getting to him, which led to Cody Bennett getting the final out for his fifth save of the season.

After going 4-for-5 with a walk in the series opener, Caresio went 3-for-4 with a walk, as his late season surge has pushed him into all-conference consideration. Glenn went 2-for-5 to push himself closer to the .300 mark on the year.

Game 2 - Sonoma State 8, San Francisco State 4

A week after his extra-inning walkoff hit against Stanislaus State, Trevor Abrams turned in his best offensive performance as a Seawolf, highlighted by a line drive grand slam in the third inning that bounced off the top of the left field fence and over for his first home run of the season as the Seawolves completed their doubleheader sweep.

Sonoma State scored six runs in all during that third inning, as Jared English singled up the middle to plate Philip Ramos and Matthew Richards doubled to plate English. After Spencer Neve and Grant St. Martin reached base, Abrams smashed his grand slam to complete the big inning for the Seawolves.

Abrams came up against in the fifth inning with runners at 2nd and third, roping a single to left center field that brought home St. Martin and Ryan O'Malley to complete a six-RBI day. Coming into the game, Abrams had only three RBI on the season.

Meanwhile, Ryan Luna had a good start for the Seawolves going 5 2/3 innings and allowing only one earned run. After allowing two runners to reach in the sixth, he gave way to Ben Herrick, who allowed the next three runners on. It was then Mitch Coombs who took the hill for Sonoma State, and he got out of the jam in the inning before throwing a scoreless seventh to earn his first save of the season.

English went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, with St. Martin going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

The Seawolves will now keep a close up on the goings on down in Monterey tomorrow, as the Otters host the Pioneers in their season finale, which will help determine whether Sonoma State or Cal State East Bay will get the final spot in the CCAA North Division playoffs, joining Chico State and CSU Monterey Bay.

UP NEXT: The Seawolves will finish off their regular season and their four-game series with the Gators on Sunday on the road in San Francisco. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
