Seawolves See Season End At The Hands Of Chico In Regional

ARCATA, Calif. -- Sonoma State got out to a strong start, plating three runs in the first inning in Friday's NCAA elimination game, but a mid-inning outburst by Chico State spelled doom as the Seawolves saw their season end with a 9-4 defeat.

The Seawolves finish the 2016 season with a 33-24-1 overall record and an eighth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Mirroring the start Humboldt State got out to against Sonoma on Thursday, the Seawolves broke through for three runs on just one hit and two errors in the first.  Carlie Daniel provided the big blast with a two-run single.

Chico State would come back to tie it up in the third when three hits, including a two-run double, pushed a trio of runs across the plate.

In the fourth, two more Chico State errors (they'd commit five in the game) set the Seawolves up yet again, and when Alison Strycula poked a single through the left side, Sonoma went back on top, 4-3.

Unfortunately, that would be that last run scored by the Seawolves.

Chico State, on the other hand, exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth, all with two outs.  Compounding the frustration for SSU was the fact that two of the Wildcats' six hits glanced off the outstretched gloves of Sonoma defenders.

Strycula finished the game 2 for 5 with a run and an RBI while Daniel had two RBIs.  In all, SSU mustered just five hits.

Friday's contest was the last for seven SSU seniors:  Amanda Llerena, Jena Kaser, Ally Bryant, Mayleen Mazon, Olivia Lucchese, Aubrie Tolliver, and Carlie Daniel.
