ROHNERT PARK -- Josh Sanchez converted a penalty kick in the fourth minute and
Armando Coronel added a very important insurance goal 25 minutes later as the Sonoma State men's soccer team held on to upset 23rd-ranked Cal Poly Pomona, 2-1, at home on Friday afternoon in the CCAA opener for both teams. The Seawolves earned their first victory of the 2016 season, rising to 1-1-3 overall. The Broncos fall to 4-2-1 this season.
"That was a great win," said SSU head coach
Marcus Ziemer after the game. "Cal Poly Pomona is a very good team and they are going to win a lot of games. We were organized coming in and the guys did exactly what we asked.
The Seawolves were the first to attack in the third minute after a Cal Poly Pomona player was called for a handball violation in the box. Sanchez scored on the ensuing penalty kick by going to the upper left of the net for his first goal of the season. Watch Sanchez's PK

The Seawolves added to their lead in the 28th minute after a missed shot from
Luis Mendoza that Coronel rebounded and scored from 10 feet out for the second goal of the game and his second goal of the season. Watch Coronel's goal

Cal Poly Pomona would not go away. In the 69th minute, the Broncos' Sergi Monso scored from 10 feet out with help from Jose Garcia and Jordan Jackmon for his third goal of the season. CPP had one more chance in the 87th minute when Jordan Jackmon attacked, but his shot was saved by SSU goalkeeper
Mitch North.
"We had a bad clear to give them the ball outside the box on their goal, but other than that, we were focused and followed the game plan," Ziemer said.
Sonoma led the game with 11 shots, five on goal and Cal Poly Pomona had 10 shots with five on goal. North made four saves for the Seawolves, and his counterpart, Jason Trejos, stopped three shots for CPP.
"Our defense was outstanding," Ziemer explained. "
Ryan Rohane,
Jose Avalos,
Eric Alvarado and
Dane Shaffar battled some very good forwards all day. Coronel was dangerous with the ball and was relentless defensively."
All told, it was a physical game that featured 37 fouls to go along with eight yellow cards. The Broncos were forced to play with 10 men for the final 23 minutes of the game after a straight red card was given to Jesus Tamayo. The Seawolves would play the final seven minutes of the game with 10 men after
Luis Mendoza would receive his second yellow card of the game.
"We need to recover tomorrow and get ready for Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday," said Ziemer. "We could easily have three or four wins this season already, but we have showed a lot of grit. We just need to keep improving."
Sonoma State concludes its two game homestand on Sunday when it takes on the Cal State San Bernardino (3-1-0, 1-0-0 CCAA). Kickoff is set for 2:00 pm.
