Men's Soccer Falls To Visiting Coyotes On Sunday, 1-0

ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State men's soccer team welcomed CCAA opponent Cal State San Bernardino on a hot Sunday afternoon, and a late goal by the Coyotes in the second half lifted the visitors over the Seawolves, 1-0.  Sonoma State fell to a record of 1-2-3, 1-1-0 CCAA and Cal State San Bernardino improved to 4-1-0, 2-0-0 CCAA.

"That was a tough one to lose," said SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer.  "I thought we were the better team in the first half, but CSU San Bernardino picked up the pressure and work rate in the second half and caused us some problems.  We still had the opportunities to win the game, but credit to (CSUSB), they worked very hard and fought for the win in the second half.  That is difficult to do on the back end of the Humboldt State/Sonoma State weekend road trip."

After a scoreless first half, the game picked up tempo in the second half. During the first half a total of seven shots were taken, and in the second half, the teams combined for a total of 15 shots, totaling 11 for each team in the 90-minute affair.  The Coyotes had five shots on goal while the Seawolves had three.

It was scoreless until the 68th minute when CSUSB's Isaias Castellanos scored the first and only goal of the game after receiving a pass from Enrique Garcia, it was Castellanos first goal of the year.  Mitch North had four saves while Coyotes' netminder Jacob Huber had three saves.

The Seawolves had a chance to tie the game in the 72nd minute when Daniel Theobald had a chance at a header. The ball went high and bounced off the crossbar. Theobald also led the way with three shots for the day, two headers, while Tony Lo and Diego Casillas led the way for CSUSB with two shots each.

"Every team in the CCAA is difficult to play against and we need to bring the same energy every game," Ziemer added.  "Our focus was much better on Friday against Cal Poly Pomona."

Sonoma State will hit the road for its next five matches, starting with a Friday evening battle at Cal State East Bay in Hayward, kickoff is set for 7:00 pm. The Seawolves won't return home again until Oct. 14 when they host Cal State Monterey Bay.

Ziemer finished by saying, "We are a little banged up and need a day or two to recover before we start to get ready for Cal State East Bay on Friday."
