SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Sonoma State Seawolves were victorious in San Francsico for their CCAA opening match against the San Francisco State Gators. They swept the match in three sets 25-18, 25-21, 25-18.
The first set was pretty back and forth until a four point run at seven and seven due to kills by
Caiti Wiesner and
Rachel Andrews with errors on the Gators' part. For the rest of the set San Francisco State had to earn most of their points because the Seawolves weren't giving any away. Sonoma at one point held a seven point lead, and the narrowest the Gators would close that lead to was four.
Sonoma started off the second set well until things got close at 9-8, but some excellent Seawolf offence widened the gap to 10-8 and forced a timeout 12-8. They kept at least a three point lead over the Gators for the rest of the set.
C. Weisner put the ball away with authority to start the third set, and even libero
Megan Bohorquez contributed a kill. The Seawolves had six kills in a row to open the set, forcing the Gators to call a time out at 7-4. Sonoma stayed ahead until 14 all, but then cruised into a win thanks to aggressive attacks.
Emily Papale (.391), Andrews (.400), and C. Wiesner(.435) lead the Seawolf offense tallying eleven kills each and boasted some impressive hitting percentages while
Courtney Seda racked up 39 assists. The defense was anchored by Bohorquez with 15 digs and
Calan Seitz with 12. In total, the Seawolves earned 56 points, 53 kills of which were kills, a team hitting percentage of .368, and 46 digs.
The next opponent for the Seawolves is Cal State East Bay in Hayward on September 23 at 7pm.
