Seawolves Overcome Early Deficit In Convincing 3-1 Victory

HAYWARD, Calif. -- After surrendering a goal just 53 seconds into the match, the Sonoma State men's soccer team rebounded to crush host Cal State East Bay, 3-1, on Friday night under the lights in Hayward.  The Seawolves rise to 2-2-3 overall and 2-1-0 in the CCAA.  The Pioneers stumble to 3-5-0 (0-3-0 CCAA).

The Pioneers were the first to attack in the first minute when Steffen Sauer scored his first goal of the season. The Seawolves did not let the early goal ruin their tempo. In the 8th minute, Armando Coronel scored his third goal of the season to even the score at one. In the 30th minute Maury Lopez scored his first of the season and his first goal as a Seawolf to give Sonoma a 2-1 lead heading into half time. In the 82nd minute Andrew Ogilvy added to the Sonoma lead with his first goal of the season.

Sonoma led the game with 12 shots, four on goal. Cal State East Bay had 10 shots, four on goal. Mitch North had three saves. Ogilvy led the way for the Seawolves with three shots on the night, while Michael Paiva led the way for the Pioneers with three shots.

Sonoma State continues their road trip on Sunday when they take on CCAA-foe, Stanislaus State. Kickoff is set for 11:30 am.

Quotes from SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer:

"That was a big win. Cal State East Bay has some very good players and is going to knock some teams off."

"We had a mix up early, which led to CSUEB's first goal, but I thought our response was fantastic. Armando Coronel scored a great goal and then Maury Lopez followed it up with a brilliant free kick."

"I thought we controlled the game for the most part in the second half, and it was great that Andrew Ogilvy got a goal to put it away.  We are pretty deep and that really helped us tonight."

"We got out of the game without any injuries and now need to get focused for Stanislaus State on Sunday. They are always tough, but we will be ready.  I think there's a lot of parity in the conference this year, so we just need to focus on one game at a time and keep getting three points."
