TURLOCK, Calif. -- Andrew Ogilvy scored two goals and assisted on another, lifting the Sonoma State men's soccer team to a 4-0 blowout of Stanislaus State on Sunday at Warrior Stadium in Turlock. The Seawolves enjoyed a weekend sweep, and have won three of their last four matches, improving to 3-2-3 overall and 3-1 in the CCAA. The Warriors are still looking for their first win of the season, falling to 0-5-3 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
Ogilvy was the first Seawolf to get on the board today when he headed in a pass from
Daniel Theobald for his second goal of the season in the 38th minute. However, that wasn't all from Ogilvy. In the 60th minute, after receiving a pass from Gabe D'Ambrosio, Ogilvy scored for his second goal of the day and his third of the season. It was his first multi-goal game as a Seawolf.
Less than four minutes later, he would assist on a goal scored by
Raad Aljabi that would put the Seawolves up 3-0. Seawolves weren't finished for the day, in the 83rd minutes
Luis Mendoza would score for his first collegiate goal putting the Seawolves in a commanding 4-0 lead.
Mitch North had four saves on the day while Stanislaus State's Tomas Zajfert had two saves. The Seawolves outshot the Warriors 12-11,
Andrew Ogilvy led the Seawolves with four shots and Ryan Chaney led the way for the Warriors with three shots, all on goal.
Sonoma State continues their road trip next weekend when it heads to Southern California to face UC San Diego on Friday. Kickoff is set for 4:30 pm.
Quotes from SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer:
"Soccer is a funny game. We were slow to get started and they hit the post and we could have been down 0-1, but then Ogilvy scored against the run of play and we took over from there."
"Our ball movement was great and we generated a lot of chances. Early in the season we are struggling to score, but we are starting to gel upfront and we have a lot of different players that can score."
"Our defense was outstanding again. Stanislaus didn't give up, but we fought hard to keep the shutout at the end."
"We are deep and have cover up front, in the midfield and in the back. When we sub, we just get different. We've been mixing up our starting lineup and it's great to bring fresh guys off the bench that are very capable."
"Ogilvy struggled to find the net early in the season, but now with three goals in two games, he's in form."
"I like that we scored different types of goals today. We scored from a long diagonal ball, individual action, and from a cross. The other teams can't just key in on one player because they don't know where we will hit them from next."
"I told the guys after the game that we are a good team and as long we keep showing up and proving it each game then everything will work out in the long run. We have great team chemistry and even the guys that aren't playing as much are all in. We have a lot of competition for spots so everybody has to work hard and perform. If somebody's a little bit off we have players that can come in a make a difference."
"We will enjoy this one tonight and it will be nice to have a day off, but then it's back to work to prepare for UC San Diego and Cal State San Marcos, which are both very tough teams, especially at their place."
