Otters Rally To Knock Off Seawolves In The Bed Of Kelp

SEASIDE, Calif. -- Kelsey McIntire slammed 13 kills and hit .320 on offense, but after holding a 2-0 lead in the match, the Sonoma State women's volleyball team surrendered the final three sets to lose to host Cal State Monterey Bay in five sets (25-18, 25-23, 22-25, 15-25, 12-15) on Saturday night at the Kelp Bed in Seaside.

The Seawolves (4-6, 2-1 CCAA) suffered their first conference loss in 22 regular season CCAA matches. In fact, the last loss came against the Otters (7-4, 2-2 CCAA) on Sept. 17 of last season in the CCAA-opener, a match that also went five sets, but from then on, Sonoma reeled off 22 straight wins in both conference play and in the CCAA tournament before falling to UC San Diego in the opening round of the 2015 NCAA Division II West Regional in Anchorage, Alaska on Dec. 4.

In the first set Kelsey McIntire and Calan Seitz lead Sonoma State in attacks to overcome the Otters and win by 7 points.

Serve receive had the Seawolves in trouble for the second set and they started out behind 6-0, but kills from Rachel Andrews and Tate Battistini got the score to within one point. The Seawolves were behind for most of the set till 23-23 on a Monterey Bay service error and a McIntire attack sealed the deal.

The third set was an even battle for the teams all the way to 19-19. Unfortunately the Otters outscored the Seawolves 6-3 at the end to take the third set. From there Sonoma struggled as errors plagued Seawolves in the fourth set as well as an agressive Monterey Bay serve and offense.

Monterey Bay got up quick 6-0, but the Seawolves clawed back to 7-8 thanks to three kills by Caiti Wiesner and McIntire. But at 9 all Seawolf errors and Otter kills closed the set and match in favor of Monterey Bay.

Lexi Mudd, Megan Bohorquez, and Alexandra Flores defended the team with 14 digs each out of the teams 79 total. Courtney Seda accumulated 48 assists on the teams 56 kills.

The Seawolves face Cal State L.A. next on September 30 at 7pm in the Wolves' Den.
