ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Freshman
Caiti Wiesner put up a career high 14 points against the Cal State LA Golden Eagles Friday night in the Wolves' Den. However, at the end of four sets the Seawolves lost 25-22, 18-25, 22-25, and 23-25.
Sonoma will face the Cal State Dominguez Hill Torros tomorrow night October 1st at 7pm in the Wolves' Den.
In the first set the Seawolves came out aggressively and full of energy. Hitting the ground to dig short balls and always moving. CSULA was also scrappy on defense, but Sonoma kept the tempo high. The first time out was called at 16-14 Sonoma, and right after the huddles broke Seitz slammed the ball down for a kill. Sonoma called the next time out at 17-15, they held the lead until Wiesner and
Kelsey McIntire put up a definitive double block to end the set and win 25-22.
The second set was a very different story. The Golden Eagles went from a .119 hitting percentage in the first set to a. 268 in the second, while the Seawolves dropped from a .227 to a .105. The Seawolves earned 12 points that set, 5 courtesy of
Rachel Andrews. At one point Sonoma was down 9-16, however, they fought their way back with some key kills from McIntire, Andrews, and Wiesner to only lose the set 18-25.
Sonoma was ahead 4-3 at the beginning of the third set, but later called a time out at 4-8 CSULA. The Seawolves had a few errors over the next few points, but at 9-15 Wiesner, McIntire, and Papale contributed kills to force a Golden Eagle time out at 12-15. The end of the third set was fairly equal between teams as far as total errors, kills and service aces, but in the end CSULA took the set 25-22.
In the fourth set Sonoma received the first point. The Seawolves found a new gear and buckled down on defense, out digging CSULA 17-13.
Megan Bohorquez,
Courtney Seda, and
Alexandra Flores combined for 13 of those digs. Of the team's 15 points that set, Wiesner contributed 6. There were five lead changes and eight tied scores. At 6 all the Golden Eagles erred three consecutive times to give the Seawolves the lead. However, the scores tied up again at 8all. Thanks to an attack by Sonoma, a Golden Eagles error, and Seda winning a joust after a hectic rally, CSULA called a time out at 12-9. Aggressive Seawolf play at the net, and Golden Eagle errors, forced another CSULA time out at 22-20, but still Sonoma increased the lead to 23-21. Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles came back with four unanswered kills to end the set and match 25-23.
As a team, the Seawolves had 72 digs, the fourth most this year. Seda and Bohorquez had 15 apiece, and freshman
Lexi Mudd had 13. Wiesner (13),
Emily Papale (11), and McIntire (10) lead the team in kills; Sonoma combined for a total of 51 and Seda contributed 39 assists. The team had seven total blocks on the night.
