Master Sommelier Ian Cauble To Be Honored By SSU Athletics

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. --  The Sonoma State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is pleased to announce Ian Cauble as this year's recipient of the Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Distinguished Student-Athlete Alumni Award.  A men's tennis student-athlete from 1999 to 2002, Cauble is one of just 230 Master Sommeliers in the world.

The Distinguished Student-Athlete Alumni Award is named for SSU Hall of Famer Dr. G. Edward Rudloff, a pioneer coach and educator who first established the principles upon which intercollegiate athletics at Sonoma State University was founded.  In 2015, Sam Tharpe was the inaugural winner of the prestigious award.

Said Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Bill Fusco, "Ian Cauble has achieved outstanding success in the wine industry as one of the top sommeliers in the world. He is most deserving of the Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Distinguished Student-Athlete Alumni Award for 2016."

After graduating with a degree in International Business and Spanish from Sonoma State University, Ian continued his passion for wine working a harvest in Portugal.

In 2011, Ian won the gold medal for the 'Best Young Sommelier in the World' and that same year, he took first place as the TOP|SOMM in the United States.  Ian was featured in the cult-classic wine documentary, SOMM, in 2012, which chronicled his quest to become a Master Sommelier. In 2016, the film's sequel, SOMM: Into the Bottle, also starred Ian as one of the documentary storytellers.

Today, you can follow Ian's worldwide hunt for exceptional wines at SommSelect.com, a free subscription that caters to knowledgeable wine enthusiasts wishing to discover sommelier-selected wines to drink tonight, or to thoughtfully expand their collections. Each day, SommSelect presents a unique bottle of wine for purchase along with Ian's insights and in-depth tasting notes.

Cauble will be honored at this year's SSU Athletics Hall of Fame Ceremony on October 15th alongside five individuals and the 1990 men's cross country team. In addition, teams from the 1991-92 academic year are invited to attend as part of a special 25-year anniversary celebration.  To learn more about this year's ceremony go to http;//www.sonomaseawolves.com/2016hof.
