ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Miriam Bloom netted the first goal of her career in the first half and it held up as the game-winner, leading the Sonoma State women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Colorado Mesa on Thursday in St. George, Utah. It is the first win of 2016 for the Seawolves, who improve to 1-1-1 on the year. The Mavericks fell to 0-2-1.
Bloom's score came in the 20th minute when
Sara Van Wagoner centered a pass from the right wing, through a defender's legs to find Bloom front and center, five yards out. Bloom didn't miss her chance, burying it into the back of the net.
From then on, both teams attempted seven shots each, but both would be held scoreless the rest of the way. Sonoma keeper
Kristen Spear made three saves, all in the second half, while CMU netminder Janelle Richmond-Buc made five stops.
Sonoma State will remain in Utah for Saturday's 11:30 am PDT (12:30 pm MDT) matchup with host Dixie State.
