SANTA ROSA, Calif. – After ten lead changes and five tied scores, the Seawolves bowed 72-64 to the UC San Diego Tritons, currently number one in CCAA women's basketball. Sonoma State falls 4-5 in conference play and 8-7 overall while the Tritons improve their record to 9-1 in the CCAA and 13-3 on the season.
The Seawolves had an impressive performance on the boards, pulling down 15 offensive rebounds and holding their opponent to only five. Sonoma's tough defense resulted in 22 Triton turnovers, nine were steals, on which the Seawolves capitalized 25 points.
Kylie Kiech was the Seawolves top scorer with 17 points,
Madison Burroughs followed with 13, and
Molly Donovan with 10. Rebounding tonight was a team affair, of the 11 Seawolves who saw the court, nine had at least 2 rebounds. The top rebounders were
Jessica Mitz (6) Burroughs (5), and
Carly Gill (4). Gill and Burroughs totaled 11 assists between them, and Gill tallied 3 steals as well.
UC San Diego jumped ahead by five in the first minute and a half, and the first point Sonma saw was a free-throw by Kiech. However, the next bucket came from a Mitz offensive rebound and put-back to get the score 3-5. The rest of the quarter would see three Seawolf steals turned points, including a trey by Kiech off a Gill steal.
Sonoma came into the second quarter ready to go. In quick succession, they scored two layups by Donovan and pair of Kiech free-throws to take the lead 22-20 in the first two minutes. The Tritons scored only once in the first seven minutes of the quarter. The last two minutes of the quarter featured two three-pointers from Gill as well as another layup from Donovan and a jumper from
Madison Barnes, thanks in part to an offensive rebound and assist by Gill. The Seawolves went into halftime ahead 34-33.
In the third quarter the Tritons stumped the Seawolves, holding them scoreless for almost seven minutes. UC San Diego, however, scored 14 points and lead the game 47-43 going into the final quarter.
Sonoma earned 21 points in the final quarter. Most of their buckets came after an offensive rebound or steal. In a little over 60 seconds,
Kim Savio scored three times, twice off a steal and once off her own offensive rebound. However, the Tritons got on a hot streak and scored five three pointers in the fourth quarter alone and secured a 10 point lead with 3:28 left in the game. They shot 70 percent in the fourth quarter and 52 percent on the night.
Sonoma State will head to The Swamp of San Francisco State on January 21. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pm.
