Kiech, Donovan Lift Seawolves Over Gators at The Swamp

SAN FRANCISCO Kylie Kiech and Molly Donovan combined for over 60 percent of Sonoma State's points in their 54-51 victory over San Francisco State on Saturday night. The Seawolves move to 5-5 in the CCAA and 9-7 overall while the Gators fall 0-11 in the CCAA and 2-16 overall.

Donovan scored eleven of her career high 17 points in the first half and was 6-11 from the field on the game, while Kiech scored 12 of her 20 points and was 2 for 5 from behind the arch in the second half alone. The Seawolves pulled down eleven offensive rebounds, almost half of them credited to Taylor Todd, and scored 12 second chance points. Once again, they capitalized off turnovers, scoring 13 points from their opponent's blunders. Todd totaled ten rebounds on the game and Carly Gill continues to lead be a leader in assists with five.

In the first half of the game, the Seawolves built the slight lead that would eventually win them the game. The teams reached half time 27-21, after both scored 14 in the first quarter, Sonoma scored 13 to the Gator's 7 in the second.

The first two minutes of the game saw back to back treys by Kiech, both assisted by Gill. Sonoma had a six-point lead with four minutes to go, but in the last 41 seconds of the quarter the Gators scored two three-pointers of their own.

With 2:09 left on the clock in the second quarter the score was all tied up at 21. Then the Seawolves started a six-point run with a jumper by Kiech which she followed up with a steal that lead to a Donovan layup. The Gators turned over the ball on a foul which the Seawolves converted into two points via a layup by Donovan and after that Gill got a steal for good measure.

Sonoma held the Gators to zero offensive rebounds in the second half. In fact, the Seawolves out rebounded their opponent 21 to 13. Kiech started scoring in the third quarter for the Seawolves by sinking a fastbreak trey off a steal by Madison Burroughs. The next bucket was another three from Kiech and Sonoma had a lead of 12 points with over half of a quarter left. However, the Gators pushed back and closed the gap to six before the final quarter.

In less than five minutes into the fourth quarter, the Seawolves extended their lead from six to 14; the largest of the night. The last part of the game was won in part by Sonoma free-throws. The Gators scored 17 total points in just over five minutes; two layups, two treys, and seven free-throws. However, by going six-for-six from their own charity stripe, the Seawolves won the game.

Cal State Dominguez Hills is up next for the Seawolves. The teams will face off on Thursday, January 26 at 5:30pm.
