Another Successful Road Match; Seawolves Trample Toros

CARSON, Calif. – The Seawolves trounced the Toros 62-38 at the Torodome Thursday night. Sonoma State rises to 6-5 in conference play and 10-7 on the season. Cal State Dominguez Hills falls to 2-9 in the CCAA and 5-13 overall.  Sonoma held the lead the entire game, ending it by their largest margin of 24 points.

The Seawolves shot an excellent 52 percent from the floor off 48 attempts, but almost half of their points came from inside the paint. The Toros had 21 turnovers, and Sonoma scored 23 points off them. Sonoma claimed 11 steals on the night, and committed only 10 turnovers of their own.  They held their opponent to scoring single digits in 3 quarters, while maintaining consistent scoring for themselves.

The two top scorers for Sonoma combined for almost 50 percent of their total points. Kylie Kiech lead the Seawolf scorers with 19 points; was 7-9 from the floor and 2-2 from behind the arch. The sophomore is currently averaging 14.9 points a game. The next highest scorer, chipping in 11 points, was Carly Gill. The team totaled 30 rebounds, but the leading rebounder, Jessica Mitz, was only accountable for six of them.

Sonoma opened game scoring with a pair of free-throws from Kiech and ended the first quarter with a seven-point lead.

In the second quarter, a trey by Kiech opened their lead to 12 points. Molly Donovan scored a layup next and increased the margin to 14. Cal State Dominguez Hills retaliated with a jumper of their own, but Sonoma kept the pressure. Jessica Mitz scored a jumper and Taylor Todd a layup with just over two minutes left in the half to lead the Toros by 14.

The teams opened the second half Seawolves 31 and Toros 17. Dominguez seemed to have found its stride, and went on a 7-0 run to open in the third quarter. When they closed the gap to seven, Sonoma called a time-out. Immediately upon returning to the court the Seawolves scored on a Kiech back-door layup assisted by Burroughs. That layup started a 9-0 run for the Seawolves and they ended the quarter ahead by 15.

Sonoma continued their intensity, consecutively scoring three times to start the fourth quarter to claim a 20-point lead and force a Toro time-out with 6:45 on the clock. They lead the rest of the contest by 17 points or more.

The Seawolves stay on the road to take on CSU San Marcos Saturday night, January 28th,  at 5:30pm.
