Cougars Rally In Second Half To Stun Seawolves, 58-49

SAN MARCOS, Calif – Cal State San Marcos had the final say against Sonoma State Saturday night 58-49. The Seawolves fall 6-6 in the CCAA and 10-8 overall, while the Cougars rise 8-6 in conference and 11-8 overall.

Carly Gill was the lead scorer in the game with 15 points, Molly Donovan followed with 12 of her own. Madison Burroughs lead Sonoma in rebounds (9) and assists (4) while also contributing 11 points and three steals. Jessica Mitz had the next highest total of rebounds (4) as well as leading the team with 4 steals.

Sonoma entered halftime ahead 27-17. They held their opponent to single digits in both quarters while scoring 15 and 12 themselves. Gill was 5 for 8 from the field and Burroughs 4 for 5, helping the team to a field shooting percentage of 40 percent. A trey by Gill game them their largest lead of ten in the first quarter with three and a half minutes left. In the second quarter, Cal State San Marcos was able to stay alive with lay-ups and free-throws while Sonoma maintained dominance of the game.

However, the second half saw a harrowing turn for the Seawolves as the Cougars would shoot 61 percent from the field and 50 percent beyond the arch, while they were reduced to a field goal percentage of 24. Sonoma was outscored 11-16 and then 11-25 in the third and fourth quarters.

The Cougars seemed to turn their field goals in for three-pointers. The Seawolves lead by five going into the final quarter, thanks to treys by Burroughs and Mitz as well as lay-ups by Gill and Donovan.

In just over a minute in the fourth quarter, both teams scored three times each. At 5:31 on the clock, the Seawolves were ahead by only one, a layup by Donovan cushioned the lead to three, but two consecutive Cougar treys took the lead from Sonoma. Cal State San Marcos kept the lead till the final buzzer.

The Seawolves will finally be back in the Wolves' Den February 3rd at 5:30 pm in Rohnert Park to take on rival Chico State.
