Sonoma Falls to Chico in Overtime on Pack the Den Night

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Seawolves lost in overtime against rival Chico State Friday night in the Wolves' Den. The loss sets Sonoma back 10-9 overall and 6-7 in the CCAA, while Chico improves to 13-7 overall and 8-6 in conference.

The top scorers for the Seawolves were Madison Burroughs (14), Kylie Kiech (13), and Carly Gill (12). Burroughs was also a game leader in rebounds with nine, her teammates Taylor Todd and Kiech followed with seven and six each, and Gill chipped in five.

Chico never lead by over three points in the first quarter. At 1:30 on the clock Burroughs stole the ball and on the next play Kiech converted the Wildcat turnover in to a set of free-throws to narrow the lead to one. Chico fired back with a layup, but Molly Donovan was able to squeeze in a jumper with less than a minute left in the quarter.

Gill opened the second quarter with a trey. A Wildcat turnover and subsequent Burroughs layup resulted in the Seawolves leading the game by four points before two minutes expired on the clock. Later in the quarter, Chico was able to get within two points of Sonoma off a layup. However, Jessica Mitz sunk a three and extended their lead to five, and they took that lead into the half.

In one minute the Seawolves upped their lead to nine thanks to lay-ups from Burroughs and Kiech and at 7:37 Mitz sunk another trey and Sonoma was ahead by 12. Next play, Todd got a steal and passed it off to Burroughs for a jumper, Sonoma's ahead by 14. The next Seawolf play, Gill got the steal and Donovan put it away in the paint to earn Sonoma's largest lead of 16. Two consecutive Wildcat three-pointers and a lay-up cut the lead to eight, but Kiech nailed a trey to help cushion the lead. Sonoma lead by nine heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter saw 10 points for the Seawolves and 19 for the Wildcats, as Whitney Branham of Chico State went five for eight from behind the arch. The teams headed into overtime 55 all. In over-time Chico again had the upper hand and scored six points to Sonoma's one and took the W on the night.

Saturday night, February 4th, Sonoma State will be in the Wolves' Den to take on Stanislaus State at 5:30pm.
