ARCATA, Calif. — Bella Amyx emerged the hero in the Seawolves' Friday-morning matchup with Cal State LA, as the lone goal proved to be the difference in their 1-0 victory. The win over the Golden Eagles propels Sonoma State to a 12-2-0 record this season and now sit at 6-2-0 in conference play.
"This is such a great win for our team," head coach Emiria Salzmann-Dunn said after the game. "We had a lot of adversity this year and to be able to reconvene after being off last week and pull through a win is just uplifting."
Amyx's goal—her fourth of the season—came in the 20th minute off a set piece near the edge of the 18.
"[The ball] was a free-kick off of the edge of the 18 and I was marked up on the keeper," the junior midfielder recalled. "When the ball went over me I re-tracked and Sarah Lindborg headed it back in front of the goal and I barely got a touch to get it in the upper V with my head."
The goal put SSU in the driver's seat early, but the team continued to push through the remaining minutes of the match, eventually amassing 22 shots, 10 of which were on-target. Kristen Spear made four saves in the game en route to her eighth clean sheet of the season.
With the victory, the Seawolves maintain sole possession of a crucial second-place slot in CCAA standings, with two games to go. A second-place finish in conference play would allow Sonoma State to secure a first-round bye in the CCAA Tournament and advance straight to the semi-final in La Jolla, California on November 3.
With playoffs on the horizon, Amyx thinks her team is starting to feel the pressure, but maintains they're very excited as well.
"We're pretty close to getting that first bye in the CCAA tournament as long as we perform in the next two games. So I think [our feelings are] a combination of excitement and just very focused."
Sonoma State will remain in the Arcata area this weekend and return to Humboldt State's College Creek Field to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills Sunday morning (10:30am), before they travel to SF State for their final regular-season match.
Salzmann-Dunn concluded, "More than anything, we are really proud of the faith and determination our players have shown all year, and I'm happy for them that their hard work paid off today."
NOTE: The Sonoma State Department of Athletics and the Women's Soccer program would like to thank Humboldt State University, their administration, coaches, staff, and student-athletes, for their generosity in hosting this weekend's games. #GoCCAA
