Seawolves Drop Another Five-Set Heartbreaker Saturday

LOS ANGELES -- Courtney Seda followed a milestone night with a near triple-double, handing out 39 assists, making 13 digs and recording nine kills, but the Sonoma State volleyball team suffered yet another five-set loss, falling to host Cal State L.A. Saturday night at the Eagles Nest in Los Angeles.

The Seawolves, who are now 1-5 in five-setters this season, have lost four of their last six matches, dropping to 15-7 overall and 9-4 in the CCAA.  The Golden Eagles improve to 12-9 (8-5 CCAA).

In the first set Sonoma State capitalized on their opponent's eleven hitting errors, and two serving errors to win the first set by four.  While Sonoma State wasn't lighting it up offensively, you could tell the effort was there, and a revived positivity was creating a strong presence on the court.  The first set was close early, but a six point serving run by sophomore defensive specialist Ashleigh Phelps helped propel the Seawolves to a 19-11 lead where they never looked back.

In the second set it was Sonoma State who had a three point lead at 17-14, only to watch it evaporate behind the stellar hitting outside hitter Karla Santos who took matters into her own hands by contributing with seven of the sixteen kills for the Golden Eagles.

In the third set the game was close but unfortunately for the Seawolves they were down the entire game but did tie the score late at 21-21.  Offensively it was Seda offensively could not be stopped as she alone put down three kills on lethal and very timely attacks.  Unfortunately for the Seawolves a four point run which included two kill for the Golden Eagles, and two hitting errors by the Seawolves was enough to wrap up this set in favor of the home team.

In the fourth set it became the Ashley Phelps serving clinic.  Phelps served fourteen balls for the team, included three aces.  Phelps not only served tough, but had pin point accuracy in locating to an area that caused lots of problems and fortunately stopping the offensive machine that Cal State Los Angeles could bring.    Not only was Phelps crucial from the serving line but it was the back row defense who accumulated nineteen digs in the blow out win. Offensively rightside freshman Amy Trephan came alive with five kills of her own.

Once again the Seawolves found themselves in another fifth set.  With both teams playing at a very high level the score was tied at 6-6, things started to fall apart for Sonoma State.  Cal State Los Angeles went on a six point run which included four kills and a service ace for the home team.

Stats of Interest:
  • Freshman rightside Amy Trephan has one of her best matches of the year contributing with 11 kills on 18 attempts for a .556 hitting percentage.
  • Defensive Specialist Ashleigh Phelps led the team in aces with four.
  • Senior setter Courtney Seda was very effective as a offensive threat contributing with nine kills on seventeen attempts and only getting blocked once.

Sonoma State will head to Turlock on Wednesday for a rescheduled match against Stanislaus State.  First serve from Fitzpatrick Arena is set for 5:00 pm.
