ROHNERT PARK -- Madison Burroughs and
Ugochi Anudokem led the Sonoma State women's basketball team with a team-high 16 points each, but the Seawolves suffered a 94-79 loss to Dominican Saturday to wrap up the season-opening CCAA/PacWest Challenge at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves fall to 1-1 while the Penguins went undefeated to start the 2017-18 campaign undefeated (2-0).
It was all Dominican from the get-go, enjoying a lead for nearly 38 minutes of the 40-minute affair. It stayed close for the first seven minutes of the contest, but the visitors went on a 10-1 run for the next two minutes to open up a double-digit lead late in the first quarter. A free throw by
Molly Donovan at the 8:01 mark of the second quarter got SSU's deficit to single-digits (nine points at 21-12), but that would be as close as the Seawolves would get the rest of the way as the Penguins eventually stretched its lead to as much as 24 points early in the fourth period before settling for the 15-point win. Sonoma did scorch the nets for 31 points in the final stanza, but it wouldn't be enough.
Anudokem collected her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Burroughs added nine rebounds to her 16 tallies, along with four assists and four steals.
Jessica Mitz also snagged four steals and dropped in 11 points. After a dismal 24.4 percent shooting performance in the first half, Sonoma rebounded to drain 62.9 percent of its shots in the second half to connect on 42.1 percent for the contest.
For Dominican, Sandra Ikeora had 21 points and 15 rebounds while teammate Alanna Scott came off the bench to led all scorers with 26 points. The Penguins connected on 47.8 percent of their attempts, making 10 three-pointers.
Sonoma State returns to action Tuesday at home against Holy Names. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
