ROHNERT PARK -- For the third time in four years the Sonoma State volleyball team hit the 20-win mark. Saturday night, the Seawolves defeated the Gators of San Francisco State University in straight sets by the scores of 25-14, 25-21, 25-12. Sonoma State raises its record to 20-7 and 14-4 in the CCAA. San Francisco State ends their season with a record of 8-18, and a CCAA record of 4-14.
In a night celebrating three seniors who have had a major impact on the Sonoma State program, it was the combination of seniors
Kelsey McIntire,
Calan Seitz and
Courtney Seda who did not disappoint. The three seniors totaled over half of the teams kills on the night and as a group they hit for a .441 hitting percentage, which is a way to go out in style.
In the first set it was a combination of numerous errors by the visitors combined with the efficiency of the home team with only four errors of their own led to an 11-point victory. Sophomore Outside Hitter
Caiti Wiesner led the charge in game one with five kills. Sonoma State was also led by the service line as the duo of
Ashleigh Phelps and
Megan Bohorquez each totaled four aces. The set was devoid of drama as the home team led from start to finish.
In set number two San Francisco State started to push back. In the game there was eleven tie scores, with the teams deadlocked at twenty-one a piece. It was then Freshman outside hitter
Amy Trephan who went back to the line and served her second ace of the set, plus two more additional serves when a ball handling error by the opposing teams setter closed out the set.
Where set number three has been a challenge for the Seawolves this season, tonight was for sure an exception. Despite a very early tie the home team never looked and ran the table, and completely dominated the final set. Seitz saved her best set for last as she tabulated four kills. With all three seniors in the front row on match point it was only a matter of who was going to finish the match with a game winning kill. It was only fitting that Seda took things into her own hands literally, and figuratively as she finished the match with a beautiful setter dump kill in front of the happy home crowd.
Sonoma State now heads to the CCAA Tournament hosted by San Francisco State. At the time of this article there are three teams tied in the CCAA South Division, and the opponent is still yet to be determined. What has been decided is that Sonoma State will play at 2:00 PM on Thursday afternoon November 16th in the first round of the CCAA Tournament.
