SAN FRANCISCO -- The Sonoma State volleyball team suffered an early exit from the 2017 CCAA Volleyball Championship Tournament Thursday afternoon in San Francisco, falling 3-1 to Cal State L.A. in the conference tournament quarterfinals. The Seawolves (20-8) will now await word on their NCAA postseason fate as the NCAA Tournament field will be announced via a live selection show on NCAA.com Monday at 4:30 pm PST.
Thursday's match was once again very competitive with three of the four sets being decided by just the slimmest of margins. In what could have been her final match of her career it was senior outside hitter
Calan Seitz leading the charge. Seitz was only one of two players who recorded double digit kills, but hit for a remarkable .471 accumulating twenty kills on 34 attempts.
In the first set it was all offense for both teams. When one team hits .368 which is what the Seawolves did, one would assume you won the set. Unfortunately, the Eagles were even more amazing hitting .375 on the set. Sonoma State jumped out early and looked like the team ready to make a serious run as they went ahead 6-2 early only to see the upstart Eagles tie it at twelve. The match continued to be a grind and with the scores tied at 23-23, Cal State Los Angeles flexed their muscle being getting back to back kills to take the set.
In the second set it was a game for the ages. The teams battled all the way through with Sonoma State only once having a three point lead midway through the set. Once again the teams found themselves tied at 23-23, only to see the match extended and tied at twenty-seven. Once again it was another big kill by Cal State L.A to give them the lead. An unusual time-out with the lead late paid off for the Eagles as they forced Sonoma State into an unforced error to lose the set 29-27.
The third game wasn't as spectacular as Cal State L.A. became error prone amassing eleven hitting errors. Sonoma State ran away with the last set and ended up winning by seven.
As the match had been all day, another grinder match was upon the two teams. Both teams hit very average with neither team hitting over .200 for the final set. Sonoma State was up big in the fourth set and with momentum on their side it was looking like a fifth set was soon becoming apparent. Cal State L.A. came alive just in time erasing a 17-10 lead by the Seawolves and finally catching up with Sonoma State at 23-23. With the pressure ratcheting up it was the freshman libero Jeshmarie Santos who went back to the line and served back to back aces to end the match and send the #1 seed from the North home.
