ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State volleyball team defeated Cal State Monterey Bay in straight sets at The Wolves' Den Friday night (25-22, 25-15, 26-24) in the first of the Seawolves' final four regular season games, all at home. Sonoma State improved to 17-7 overall and 11-4 CCAA play as the visiting Otters fell under .500 at 11-12 overall and 5-10 CCAA in conference play.
For the second time this season it was the Seawolves who rose to the occasion on the evening. All cylinders were clicking as a full team effort was on display for the home fans. Offensively the Seawolves were dominant and consistent throughout the entire match which has plagued the team in recent matches. Leading the charge was senior setter
Courtney Seda who accumulated 44 assists with pin point accuracy and timely decision making on just who to set in what situation.
From the attack line Junior Middle
Morgan Annala and Sophomore Outside Hitter
Caiti Wiesner who both chipped in with 13 kills led the team, while Senior Middle
Kelsey McIntire had a great night of her own adding to the team's dominance with 10 kills on 16 attempts with zero hitting errors.
In set number one it was obvious that the team was ready to compete. Each time the Seawolves were pushed, they pushed back. While the home team had the lead early in the set, it was at 20-20 that true grit and determination were on display. Once again it was sophomore defensive specialist
Ashleigh Phelps going back and serving an ace, and then back to back kills by Wiesner and Annala were enough to propel the team to a first and ever-important first set win.
In the second set it was all Seawolves, thanks to some crisp play and relentless defense, which was key in the ten point win.
In the final set the challenge was on as both teams saved their best play for last. Both teams excelled from the attacking line, but it was the 12 digs by
Ashleigh Phelps who led the charge.
After the match Head Coach
Bear Grassl commented "I was very excited about our balanced performance tonight. We had great effort from everyone against a good Cal State Monterey Bay team."
On Saturday, the Seawolves welcome to The Wolves' Den the only team in the North Divison to beat them, Cal State East Bay.
