ROHNERT PARK -- Calan Seitz hammered a season-high 15 kills with a .387 hitting percentage, leading the Sonoma State volleyball team to a four-set victory (25-19, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22) over visiting Cal State East Bay Saturday night at The Wolves' Den.
With the victory, the Seawolves (18-7 overall, 12-4 CCAA) capture the CCAA North Division title and is guaranteed at least a Top 4 seed in the eight-team CCAA Championship Tournament in two weeks in San Francisco. The Pioneers fell to 15-10 and 8-8 in conference play.
In the first set, the home team benefited from multiple errors offensively, while also being efficient in their own right putting down 14 kills, but more importantly having a side out percentage of 73% which is extremely efficient.
In the second set offensively the Seawolves came alive. After only having one kill in the first set, Senior and the always dynamic
Calan Seitz ripped off six more kills on 10 attempts hitting an unreal .700 hitting percentage for the set on her 10 swings. Also contributing on the offensive barrage was the dynamic duo in the middle of
Kelsey McIntire, and
Morgan Annala who couldn't be stopped as they both chipped in with four kills each on the identical number of attempts with eight, and zero hitting errors. For the set offensively 20 kills lit up the scoreboard en route to the win. Unfortunately lightning almost scored again in where Sonoma State jumped out again 19-11, only to see a 10-3 run by the visitors who brought the set to within one late. The Seawolves were going to have none of that Seitz who was amazing all set contributed with her teams last three kills of the set and sending the team to the locker room with a 25-23 win.
Finishing off a team who has beaten you earlier in the year can be a challenge, and Cal State East Bay made sure they weren't going to quietly away after a tough second set. The Pioneers offensively came alive continuing the push they made in the second game, only to stay hot, while the Seawolves came back down to earth. In the set Cal State East Bay flexed their muscle in the blocking department as they accumulated four of their eleven total blocks for the set. Cal State East Bay for the entire set had the lead, and kept the home team, and their fans from going home early.
With the match tied at 18-18 the home team finally started to pull away behind the tough serving of sophomore outside
Caiti Wiesner. Coupled with that it was Seitz again who blasted away six kills in the set with four of them after the 18th point. This offensive explosion showed the fans that they were not going to a fifth set.
"The great defensive effort led by
Ashleigh Phelps,
Megan Bohorquez, and
Courtney Seda were the difference in tonight's match. Cal State East Bay is tough, and we had to fight off their physicality with our floor defense tonight." Commented Head Coach
Bear Grassl after the match.
Sonoma State returns to action on Monday when it hosts Humboldt State for a 2:00 pm matinee. Admission is free. The Seawolves will then wrap up the regular season next Saturday night at home against San Francisco State at 7:00 pm.
