Seawolves Cruise To Convincing Three-Set Win Over 'Jacks

ROHNERT PARK -- Caiti Wiesner and Morgan Annala hammered double-digit kills while Megan Bohorquez and Ashleigh Phelps provided double-digit digs as the Sonoma State volleyball team cruised to their fourth straight win, a three-set victory (25-19, 25-22, 25-21) over visiting Humboldt State on Monday afternoon at The Wolves' Den.  The Seawolves rose to 19-7 overall and 13-4 in the CCAA.  The Lumberjacks stumbled to 3-19 (2-14 CCAA).

The Seawolves were able to stay engaged, and committed to a strong end of the season push in conference play.   With a CCAA North already clinched, there is still one item still not clinched; currently SSU is holding the #9 spot in the West Region rankings, but with losses over the weekend by both UC San Diego (at #7) and the University of Alaska Anchorage (at #8), accompanied by wins by the Seawolves could help push the team back into the Top 8 which is needed to make the NCAA Tournament.  With next round of rankings coming up Wednesday, getting another win would really help the Seawolves as they look for another shot at the National Tournament.

In the first set the score was tied at 1-1, but after that the Seawolves never looked back dominating the set.  Offensively Sonoma State put up 19 kills for the set. In a balanced first three players contributed with three kills each.  Middle Hitters Morgan Annala, Kelsey McIntire, and sophomore outside hitter Caiti Wiesner were more than enough to put the Lumberjacks on their heels, and close out with a six point victory.

In the second set the home team started a little sluggish, but were quickly able to close the gap at eleven a piece.  From that point on it was a tough battle with both teams trading punches on the court. Finally, at 20-20 the home team said enough was enough and started pulling away.  Four straight kills, two apiece by Annala, and pin hitter Amy Trephan opened up the game and helped the home team win the second set by three points.

With no let down in their minds the third set was tight all the way until late in the set.  Finally, the Seawolves opened up a four point lead and that was enough for the home team to cruise to the finish with.  In the fourth set McIntire was a big part of that success as she contributed with four kills, and a block in the set.

Stats of Interest:
  • Outside Hitter Caiti Wiesner led the team with 13 kills.
  • Junior Middle Hitter Morgan Annala had 12 kills on 21 attempts for a .476 hitting average.  On the blocking line, Annala tallied three total blocks.
  • Senior Outside Hitter Calan Seitz had zero hitting errors contributing with six kills on 21 swings.

Sonoma State will wrap up the regular season on Saturday at home against San Francisco State at 7:00 pm.  It will also be Senior Night as the Seawolves will celebrate their three seniors -- Kelsey McIntire, Courtney Seda and Calan Seitz -- in a special pregame ceremony.  These three players have contributed tremendously in the success of the program over the past four seasons, with them totaling 306 matches played.
