Seawolves Unable To Find Buzzer-Beater In Loss to Toros

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — A back-and-forth game ended in heartbreak for the Sonoma State Seawolves, as the team's late comeback bid fell just short in the final seconds of their Friday night matchup with Cal State Dominguez Hills, who walked away 64-62 victors.

Trailing by seven late in the second half, the Seawolves found themselves down by their second-largest deficit of the game. However, with 2:09 remaining and the score 62-55 in favor of Dominguez Hills, Armani Nicolis converted a free throw, before both he and Brandon Tillis each sunk shots from beyond the arc to pull within one. With 15 seconds remaining, Dominguez Hills inbounded, where Davion Mize was waiting to send Jonathan Nichols to the line.

Nichols missed his first attempt before making the second, giving his team a 64-62 lead before SSU's final push. The Seawolves played for the win as Jackson Gion let off a floater from the sideline with eight seconds remaining, but the shot missed. Tillis came down with the offensive rebound and passed the ball around, which eventually found Nicolis, but the junior guard also missed a game-winning opportunity from three-point range as the ball spun inside the rim, before popping out.

With the loss, the Seawolves fall to 3-4 and 1-2 in CCAA play while Cal State Dominguez Hills earns their first conference win of the season. The Toros improve to 3-6 and 1-2 in CCAA action.

Dominguez Hills' best run came in the first half as they put up 10-straight points over 2:43 to turn a 4-6 deficit into a 14-6 lead. However, led by Tillis, the Seawolves immediately countered with four-straight layups to pull even at 14. Tillis, who put up 13 by night's end, would go on to score 10 of his team's 28 first-half points.

Nicolis and Isaac Davidson each impressed in the second half—the latter going a perfect 4-4 from the field and 2-2 from the line, while Nicolis collected nine points, seven rebounds and a steal.

Sonoma State now looks ahead to December 7 as they prepare to take on the 5-2 San Francisco State Gators. Tipoff is slated for 7:30pm PT in the Wolves' Den.
