ROHNERT PARK -- Rallying from an 11-point deficit early in the second half, the Sonoma State women's basketball team took a one-point lead on a
Jerrica Crosby jumper with five seconds remaining in the contest, but on the ensuing possession, Cal State Dominguez Hills got fouled on a shot attempt with one tick on the clock and Nautica Morrow drained both free throws to down the hosts, 61-60, on Friday night at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park.
The Seawolves fell to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the CCAA. The Toros, meanwhile, remain perfect in conference play at 3-0 (5-3 overall).
Sonoma held the advantage early on, taking a six-point lead near the end of the first quarter at a score of 15-9. However, CSUDH went on a tear, scoring 23 of the next 29 points dropped in by either team in a span of 11-plus minutes to take what would be the largest lead of the game for the visitors. Slowly but surely, the Seawolves chipped away, eventually tying the ballgame at 41-41 on a
Carly Gill three-pointer to open the fourth quarter.
The Toros went on a 13-5 run for the next four minutes to push their lead to as much as eight points with 5:51 to go, but again, the Seawolves clawed back with a 12-3 run to regain a lead (58-57 with a minute and change to play). A Toro two changed the lead back to CSUDH for the better half of a minute before Crosby drained a 10-footer from the right side of the basket to put the hosts up by one before the foul at the other end of the floor determined SSU's fate.
Ugochi Anudokem supplied team-highs of 17 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
Jessica Mitz added 13 points and Gill with 10. Both Gill and
Madison Burroughs also handed out six assists.
Sonoma State returns to action on Thursday when it hosts San Francisco State in the Wolves' Den at 5:30 pm.
