ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Sonoma State succumbed to Stanislaus State on Saturday night 52-46 in the Wolves' Den. Sonoma now sits with a 6-8 record in the CCAA and 10-10 on the season, while the Warriors rise to 10-5 in conference and 12-12 overall.
Jessica Mitz was a team leader in rebounds with five, three steals, and 12 points going 4 for 7 from the field in the fourth quarter alone and 6 for 12 on the game.
Madison Burroughs also had 12 points, shooting 6 for 14 in the field as well as chipping in five rebounds. However, it was
Taylor Todd who lead the Seawolves in rebounds with seven, five of them were offensive, and
Kylie Kiech added ten points and two steals of her own.
Sonoma State was behind in the first quarter until a little over a minute and a half left.
Molly Donovan scored a lay-up to gain a one point lead. The next run down the floor, Burroughs had a steal and took it to the other hoop for a fast break lay-up. Stanislaus tallied a lay-up of their own, but Kiech had the last laugh of the quarter with a trey at 37 seconds left on the clock.
The Seawolves' largest lead of the night was by six points in the second quarter, thanks to a three-pointer by
McKaiela Tyler. Unfortunately, right after Stanislaus State went on a 0-8 run to close the half ahead of Sonoma by 2.
The third quarter was low scoring for both teams. The Warriors scored nine while the Seawolves only scored seven. Each team was only able to get off twelve shots in the ten minutes.
The final quarter saw the most points of the night from either team. Mitz scored eight of Sonoma's 14 points. Down by six in the beginning of the quarter, Sonoma was able to shorten Stanislaus' lead to three from a layup by Mitz with 3:28 left in play. The Warriors extended the lead to seven again, and the Seawolves used a pair of Kiech free-throws and a lay-up from
Carly Gill to close within three of their opponent with less than half a minute left. Sadly, the Warriors pulled away once again and took the W by six points.
Next up for the Seawolves is Cal State East Bay on February 10 at 5:30 pm in Hayward.
