ROHNERT PARK -- Brigid Ruiz started twice and went seven innings in the two games combined, giving up just six hits, no walks and striking out three while Sonoma State's offense pounded out eight extra base hits of the 14 it accumulated throughout the day, leading to a sweep of visiting Cal State San Bernardino Saturday afternoon with scores of 8-0 in five innings in game one, and 3-2 in the series finale.
The Seawolves improve to 12-7 overall and 7-5 in the CCAA. The Coyotes fell to 12-10 (7-7 CCAA).
In the first game,
Alyssa Cuffia slapped a single to left field scoring
Jenny Collazo for the first run of the day. With a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Seawolves put up seven runs, inducing the eight-run mercy rule. With the bases loaded,
Jenn Amaral put down a squeeze bunt and the throw to get her out at first went wide allowing three runs to score on the play before Amaral got around to third base for the 4-0 lead.
Sarah Langley brought home Amaral with a single up the middle to make it 5-0, then with runners on first and second and two outs,
Alison Strycula tripled to right field, scoring
Lindsey Calcany Blair and
Mykala Tokunaga, but the throw in from right field went errant, allowing Strycula to make it all the way home for the 8-0 lead and mercy-rule win.
Sonoma pounded nine hits in the win, two of which came off the bats of
Jordann White and Cuffia. Meanwhile, Ruiz gave up just two hits to the Coyotes in her shutout effort.
In the series finale, the Coyotes got on the board first with an RBI double in the top of the first, but the Seawolves got the run back in the second on a Langley RBI double that scored Amaral. Tied at 1-1 in the fourth, Calcany Blair squeezed home Amaral for the 2-1 lead, then to lead off the fifth inning,
Karly Macadangdang hit a deep shot to left field that hit off the base of the wall and got away from the left fielder, allowing Macadangdang to score on the inside the park home run.
In the seventh, CSUSB got a run back, but it wouldn't be enough as
Brielle Vidmar notched her first save of the season for pitching the final three innings after coming in for
Gabby Dupree (3-0) after Dupree went two innings after Ruiz started and also went two innings. Together, they allowed nine CSUSB hits.
Sonoma State will hit the road next week, starting with a Tuesday-Wednesday four-game makeup series at Cal State Dominguez Hills before playing at Cal State San Marcos Friday-Saturday.
