Vidmar's No-Hitter Highlights Midweek Sweep Of Toros

CARSON, Calif. -- Brielle Vidmar tossed her first-career no-hitter Wednesday, leading the Sonoma State softball team to an 8-0 victory in five innings in game one of the doubleheader against host Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson.  The Seawolves (16-7, 11-5 CCAA) also won game two to sweep the four-game series with the Toros (1-24, 0-20 CCAA) and extend their win streak to seven games.

It only took five innings, but Vidmar's no-hitter is the 22nd no-hitter in SSU softball history, the last no-no came back on Feb. 27, 2015 when Amanda Llerena held Cal State San Bernardino without a hit.  It was also the second no-hitter for Sonoma State against Cal State Dominguez Hills; the first and last time came back on May 4, 1999 when Suzanne Richards no-hit the Toros.

Though no Cal State Dominguez Hills batter got a hit off Vidmar in game one on Wednesday, three Toros did reach base -- two via hit by pitch and the other by a walk.  Vidmar struckout four in the effort.

Meanwhile, the Seawolf offense pounded out eight runs in the first game to induce the eight-run mercy rule.  Karly Macadangdang got it started with a leadoff home run to straight away center field.  In the second, Jenn Amaral came around to score when Lindsey Calcany Blair's bunt attempt to move Amaral from second to third was successful after a throwing error by the CSUDH pitcher allowed Amaral to score.

Jordann White recorded an RBI groundout in the third to score Macadangdang, pushing the SSU lead to 3-0.  Five more runs came in to score in the top of the fifth inning, starting with a two-run double by White, followed by an RBI single by Alyssa Cuffia, an RBI groundout by Sarah Langley, then a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt by Calcany Blair to make it 8-0 in favor of the Seawolves.

In game two, Sonoma State again scored first when Cuffia doubled home White for the 1-0 lead in the top of the first.  Cal State Dominguez Hills did get the run back on an RBI single by Analisa Nicholson in the bottom of the first to knot the game at 1-1.

In the third, Jenny Collazo smacked a double to left field, scoring Macadangdang, then Collazo scored on a single up the middle by Amaral for the 3-1 lead.  Alison Strycula pushed the Seawolf lead to three at 4-1 in the fourth inning by tripling to left center before scoring on a wild pitch.  Two more SSU runs came around to score in the top of the fifth inning on a solo home run by White and an RBI double by Madison Barto to score Cuffia.

Sonoma State's starting pitcher in game two, Teresa Danenberg, did run into a bit of trouble in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with one out.  The Toros managed to get two runs home, but Danenberg worked herself out of the jam to keep the Seawolves in the lead, 6-3.

The SSU bats weren't done, however, as White led off the seventh with a double, then she scored on another double by Cuffia.  Langley then delivered another RBI double scoring Cuffia for an 8-3 advantage.  Alex Flores followed with an RBI single up the middle that scored Langley, but Calcany Blair also scored on the play due to a throwing error by the CSUDH centerfielder, making it 10-3.  Flores eventually found her way home when Strycula lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to put Sonoma up big, 11-3.  Mykala Tokunaga relieved Danenberg in the seventh for her first-career pitching appearance and Tokunaga gave up a couple of two-out singles, but induced a groundout to end the game.

Danenberg improves to 3-2 this season; she allowed three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out four in her six innings of work.

White led the way offensively in game two, going 3 for 4 with a double, a home run, an RBI and three runs scored, and Cuffia was 2 for 3 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.

Sonoma State will remain in Southern California to take on Cal State San Marcos in a four-game set Friday and Saturday in San Marcos.  First pitch of Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
