Collazo, Seawolves Sweep Tritons To Win Weekday Series

ROHNERT PARK — Second baseman Jenny Collazo tallied a total of 3 hits in 5 at-bats, including a three run home run to help power the Sonoma State softball team past UC San Diego in Wednesday afternoon's doubleheader sweep at Seawolf Softball Field by scores of 2-1 and 6-2, respectively. After Wednesday's sweep, the Seawolves secured a 3-1 series victory and improve to 23-8 on the year and 18-6 in conference play, while the Tritons fall to 15-15 overall and 10-14 in the CCAA.

Game one on Wednesday was a pitcher's duel for the entirety of the contest. Brielle Vidmar got the call to the pitcher's circle for the Seawolves and found herself in trouble early on. After giving up a leadoff double, the ensuing batter advanced the runner to third on a groundout to second. Then, with one out, Vidmar gave up an RBI double and suddenly the Seawolves found themselves in a 1-0 hole. Vidmar would escape the inning without any further harm.

Sonoma was unable to get into a rhythm with the bats until the fourth inning. After Karly Macadangdang led off the inning with a fly out to left, Collazo doubled down the right field line. Jordann White wanted to get in on the action and hit a double of her own to right center, scoring White in the process. After Madison Barto flied out to center, Lindsey Calcanyblair was able to move White over to third on a single with two outs, and Sarah Langley continued the rally by knocking White home on single past short stop.

This would be the only offense the Seawolves would need as they would go on to beat the Tritons 2-1. Brielle Vidmar went the distance in this one, only allowing the one first inning run, and only five hits, all while improving to 9-3 on the year. Sonoma would tally only the two fourth inning runs on four hits.

Game two is when the bats would come alive for the Seawolves, although the first few innings indicated the conference foes would be on their way to another pitcher's duel. It was not until the fourth inning that Sonoma was able to break it open. Calcanyblair led off the inning with a hit by pitch and Sarah Langley would score her on a double into left center. Langley would advance to third on an errant throw and Brigid Ruiz would bring her home on a single through the left side. Ruiz would advance to second on a wild pitch and to third on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Flores. Then, Alison Strycula would ultimately knock Ruiz in on a single through the right side.

Things got interesting in the sixth inning as the Tritons were able to score twice in the inning cutting the deficit to 3-2, scoring both runs off of Gabby Dupree with two outs. However, Sonoma would give themselves some breathing room in the bottom of the inning when Collazo hit a three run home run with two outs to give the Seawolves a 6-2 lead heading into the final frame. Vidmar, who threw a complete game in the first game would come in to finish the Tritons off, only giving up one walk in the inning.

The bats had much more of a presence in the second game, tallying nine hits in addition to their six runs. Dupree was excellent on the mound as well, only giving up the two runs on seven hits in six innings of work. She improves to 4-0 on the year.

The Seawolves will be back in action on Thursday night as they head to Turlock for the Tournament of Champions, but first they will play a non-conference game against Western Washington at 6:00 pm.
