Softball Crushes Cavaliers, Crusaders On Day One Of TOC

TURLOCK, Calif. -- Alyssa Cuffia and Alex Flores both went 4 for 5 on Friday to lead the Sonoma State softball team to a pair of wins on day one of the 2017 Tournament of Champions, presented by the City of Turlock and hosted by Stanislaus State at Pedretti Sports Complex.

The Seawolves, who beat Concordia 7-2 to open in the tournament Friday afternoon before defeating Northwest Nazarene 9-1 in six innings hours later, have won six in a row -- and 17 of their last 18 -- to improve to 26-8 overall.

After day one of the TOC, Sonoma currently leads the 26-team tournament by way of an undefeated record and a run differential of +13, one run ahead of Cal State Monterey Bay (+12) and three ahead of Chico State (+10).

The offense sizzled Friday, posting a .421 batting average with 24 hits in the two games combined, led by Cuffia and Flores with four hits each, followed by Karly Macadangdang, Jenny Collazo, Jordann White and Madison Barto with three hits apiece.  Both Cuffia and Collazo each had a team-high three RBI as well.

In the pitching circle, Brielle Vidmar and Brigid Ruiz won the games they started; Vidmar went six innings and gave up five hits, two runs and one walk while striking out six in the 7-2 win over Concordia before Ruiz allowed just one hit in her complete-game effort, striking out four in the 9-1 win in six innings over Northwest Nazarene.

Sonoma State will face Simon Fraser (4:30 pm) and Hawaii Pacific (7:00 pm) on Saturday, both games taking place on Field #3 of Pedretti Sports Complex in Turlock.  Live stats for Saturday's games will be available here.
