HAYWARD, Calif. -- After a 2-0 loss in game one,
Jenny Collazo blasted two home runs and had five RBI to lift the Sonoma State softball team to a 6-4 win in game two, salvaging a doubleheader split with host Cal State East Bay on Friday at Pioneer Field in Hayward. The Seawolves move to 31-13 overall and 21-9 in the CCAA, remaining in third place in the conference standings. The Pioneers are now 25-19 (17-15 CCAA).
In the opener, the Seawolves couldn't get anything going offensively against the Pioneers' starting pitcher Abby Greer, who earned a five-hit shutout with two walks and three strikeouts. Sonoma's
Brielle Vidmar (12-6) only allowed three hits, two of which were RBI doubles in the very first inning.
Game two was nothing but a home run derby as both teams combined for five home runs, three coming off Seawolf bats. It was the host Pioneers to strike first on a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning.
Alyssa Cuffia evened the score at 1-1 with a solo shot of her own in the fourth inning, but CSUEB quickly countered with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to regain a one-run lead at 2-1.
Collazo came up in the top of the fifth to rocket a two-run home run to right center field, scoring
Karly Macadangdang to put SSU up 3-2. One inning later, Collazo did it again, but it was of the three-run variety that scored
Alison Strycula and
Brigid Ruiz for the 6-2 lead.
Cal State East Bay threatened with a run in the sixth and another in the seventh, but both
Gabby Dupree and Ruiz worked to close out the game to secure the win.
Collazo finished 3 for 4 at the plate with the aforementioned two bombs and five RBI. Dupree (5-0) remained perfect in the circle, going the first six-plus innings before Ruiz notched her first save of the year working the final two outs of the seventh.
Sonoma State and Cal State East Bay will wrap up the four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader that begins at Noon.
