Seawolves Split Doubleheader, Weekend Series With Gators

ROHNERT PARK -- It was a tale of two games for the Sonoma State softball team on Sunday afternoon. After falling 3-1 in game one against the San Francisco State Gators, the Seawolves caught fire with the bats and responded with a 10-6 win in game two at Seawolf Softball Field. Sonoma improves to 30-12 on the year and 20-8 in the CCAA after Sunday's split. Meanwhile, the Gators now sit at 19-23 overall and 13-19 in the CCAA.

Sonoma and SF State also split Saturday's doubleheader; the Gators took the series opener 4-3 before the Seawolves rallied for a 6-1 win in Saturday's nightcap.

In game one of Sunday afternoon's doubleheader, the Seawolves found themselves in a hole early on. Brigid Ruiz got the start in game one and after getting two quick outs to start, the Gators were able to ignite a two out rally, consisting of a double and back-to-back singles and the Seawolves found themselves trailing 1-0 heading into their first at-bat.

The Gators would tack on another run in the second inning on two hits and two errors, before the scoring would ultimately slow down, and Ruiz's day would come to an end. Gabby Dupree would replace Ruiz in the pitching circle and go on to hold the Gators scoreless over the next four innings, before giving up a run in the 7th.

With one last chance remaining in the ballgame, SSU was finally able to start a two out rally. Only accumulating three hits heading into the 7th, Sonoma was able to tack on three more hits, scoring one run in the process on an RBI single by Jenn Amaral, bringing their game one total to one run on six hits. Unfortunately, the rally came to an end, resulting in a 3-1 loss for the Seawolves.

Game two also did not start off the way the Seawolves envisioned. Teresa Danenberg made her seventh start of the year in the pitching circle and found herself in trouble early on, giving up two runs on two hits before the inning came to a close. Sonoma would get those two runs back in the second inning after Amaral scored on a Karly Macadangdang groundout, and Leanna Georges scored on a Jenny Collazo RBI double.

Sonoma would take a 4-2 lead in the following inning thanks to some help from the Gator defense. The first run in the third inning came on a SAC bunt by Alex Flores, scoring Alyssa Cuffia after initially getting in a rundown. Flores would go onto score on a wild pitch later in the inning.

Now looking for a shutdown inning, the Seawolves got into trouble right away after an error allowed the leadoff hitter to reach second. The Gators would go on to score two runs in the inning, tying the game a four apiece. SF State tallied two more runs in the following inning, this time off of Brielle Vidmar, and the Seawolves now trailed 4-6.

SSU would respond to the Gators middle innings rally in a huge way in the bottom on the fifth inning. The inning started with three straight hits, and a bases loaded walk to Flores to score the first run of the inning. Then, Ruiz hit a two RBI double, and Amaral scored Ruiz on a RBI single, all before Georges made the first out of the inning, which was a productive RBI groundout. Collazo would then single through the left side with two outs to knock in her second RBI of the game, before the inning would come to a close with SSU leading 10-6, which would ultimately be the final score.

Vidmar would walk away from game two as the winning pitcher, after throwing 3.1 innings in relief, giving up two runs on four hits along the way. It was Vidmar's 12th win on the year. The offense accumulated 11 hits in game two, with Collazo, White, and Cuffia each having two apiece.

The Seawolves now head on the road to take on Cal State East Bay for a four game series. The first doubleheader in Hayward is scheduled for Friday April 14th at 1:00 PM, and the final two games of the series will be Saturday April 15th, starting at 12:00 PM.
