Seawolves Trample Toros with Huge Game 2 Rally

CARSON, Calif. - Sonoma State won game one 5-3 and game two 15-14 to begin their three game series against Dominguez Hills. The Seawolves rise to 23-21 overall and 18-19 in CCAA play while the Toros fall to 14-34 overall and 12-25 in conference.

Game 1:
Sonoma bested Dominguez hills 5-3. They had 5 runs on 6 hits. Haydon Turpin started for Sonoma and allowed only 4 hits and 2 earned runs in six innings while striking out one. Bennet closed, holding the Toros to one earned run.

Trevor Abrams was a whopping 3 for 3 with one run and 2 RBI's. Jake Sahagian was 2 for 3, and Grant St. Martin was 1 for 3 with two runs scored.

In the top of the fourth inning, Sonoma was down 2-0. St. Martin was stole second and advanced to third on an error, so when Trevor Abrams doubled to left center, it was an easy score for the Seawolves.

Still down in the top of the sixth, it was again Abrams with the RBI to tie the game. This time a single thought the left side to bring in West from second base.

The eight inning is where Sonoma surged ahead. After Abrams was intentionally walked, Mann reached on a fielding error to advance to second, on the same error Abrams and St. Martin scored to put the Seawolves up 4-2.

Sonoma faced a new pitcher in the ninth. Alex Emerick came in to pinch hit and was walked, and then advanced to second courtesy of a sacrifice bunt by Rayson Romero. Emerick advanced to third and eventually scored on wild pitches.

Game 2:
Resilience and a late rally in the eighth inning boosted the Seawolves to win 15-14. Sonoma had 15 runs on 20 hits, seven of their runs were in the 8th inning.

Daniel Caresio was 5 for 6, which is the first 5-hit game for a Seawolf in three years. He also scored three runs and tallied 2 RBI's. Bryce Nagata blasted his second homer of the season as well as scoring two more runs. Abrams lead the team with 3 RBI's, Emerick and Mann had 2 apiece. Four Seawolves were able to claim doubles and two stole bases.

In the last six innings, the Seawolf pitching staff only allowed four runs and five hits.

The Toros jumped ahead early and were ahead 5-0 in the first inning. But in the top of the second Sonoma gained some ground and were able to score three. With two outs, the Seawolves scored as Nico Toni, Seidell, Caresio and Emerick all singled in a row. Dominguez Hills erred on Emerick's single and both Caresio and Seidell were able to score.

Sonoma was down 3-7 in the top of the fourth inning. Abrams doubled to left and brought in both Grant St. Martin and Caresio to set the score 5-7.

The Toros scored three more in the bottom of the fourth, Sonoma answered back with two in the top of the fifth, both teams kept scoring, but even after a homer by Nagata in the sixth, the Seawolves were down 8-13.

Simply put, the Sonoma bats went to work in the eight inning, and again, with 2 outs. Sonoma hit four singles in a row, and then Abrams and Mann both hit doubles as if to add two large exclamation points to the run. When the dust settled, the Toros had had two pitching changes and the Seawolves had seven runs and were ahead 15-13.

Their opponent scored once more in the bottom of the ninth, but a strikeout by Ricky Clark ended the game and Sonoma took the W.

Tomorrow the two teams complete their series at 11:00am.
