Roehrig Scores Golden Goal To Open 2017 With A Bang

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- After the Sonoma State men's soccer team fell behind early, Andrew Ogilvy netted the equalizer in the 19th minute, then after both teams went scoreless for the remainder of regulation, Evan Roehrig ended the contest with a rocket from the top of the box to give the Seawolves a thrilling 2-1 overtime win over host Western Washington at Harrington Field in Bellingham, Wash.

The Seawolves open the 2017 campaign at 1-0-0.

Sonoma State will remain in the state of Washington to take on Seattle Pacific Saturday at Interbay Stadium in Seattle, Wash.  Kickoff is also set for 7:00 pm.

Quotes from Head Coach Marcus Ziemer:

"That was a really intense game that could of gone either way. WWU is a very good game and will win a lot of games this year."

"We started very well and played in their half for the first ten minutes before they scored on a corner kick. I was really happy with our response. Going down didn't phase us. We didn't drop our heads, we just went to work."

"Our ball possession was excellent. We kept the ball moving and made them chase and controlled the game for long periods of time."

"WWU had some very dangerous players. Our defense was solid and centerbacks Eric Alvarado and Luke La Vanway kept their top scorer from finding the net."

"We created some great chances and if it weren't for some outstanding saves by their keeper and some second efforts by their defenders we could have had another couple of goals."

"Marcus Salvador was great on both sides of the ball and had a great game. They got in behind us in OT and his perfectly timed slide tackle kept us alive.  Midfielder Luis Mendoza was everywhere. He played the whole game and didn't stop moving. He's very creative and fun to watch."

"Josh Sanchez's work in midfield was outstanding. His defensive work is always excellent, but he was dangerous in the attack and assisted both goals. He played a nice ball into Andrew Ogilvy, who turned and slotted it and Evan Roehrig got on the end of his perfectly timed thru ball and slotted it past the keeper."

"Our depth really paid off. We were able to rest guys in the back, midfield and up top. When we sub the level doesn't drop, it just gets different. We have a lot of competition for starting spots , which keeps everybody sharp and also means that we can rest players and make sure that we are peaking at the right time of the season."

"Overall the CCAA teams did really well today. I think we have the toughest preseason schedule in the region (Western Washington, Seattle Pacific, California Baptist, Point Loma, Fresno Pacific and Holy Names) and the CCAA is going to be very tough. There will be 8-9 teams battling it out for the conference title and NCAA berth and there are no easy games. We will recover today and then be ready for Seattle Pacific on Saturday night. They are always tough."
